This one or The Shining?

Obviously, if you have seen The Shining, the similiarities between the two movies are apparent. So which one do you prefer? I have to say, that while The Shining itself is not a bad movie, it was maybe a little poorly executed at some places, in other words, maybe a little cliché. When the twist in Hide and Seek was presented, I felt a little the same, but I think I prefer The Shining.

So what do you prefer?

...they weren't cliches in The Shining. They became cliche when other movies copied it.

Got to a agree with you here as I cannot imagine anyone accusing Stanley Kubrick of being clichéd with any of his movies!

The Shining is a masterpiece, not a cheap Hollywood flick...

I prefer the movie that some say Stephen King "borrowed" from to make THE SHINING. I'll stay out of that debate. It is a little cult movie called BURNT OFFERINGS (1976).

You are at the lowest level of caring.

The Shining book was released in 1977. I kind of doubt Steven King had time to write the entire [huge] novel and have it on shelves within a year of Burnt Offerings. Plus he admits he was inspired by a John Lennon song so why would he not admit to being inspired by Burnt Offerings? (which I own by the way and love)

The Shining is a 1977 horror novel by American author Stephen King. The title was inspired by the John Lennon song "Instant Karma!", which contained the line "We all shine on…".

leatelamon, I hope you are joking, right? The Shining hands down! How can you compare an original masterpiece with a cliché by-the-book collage???

The Shining is not cliché. As other poster said some things have become cliché when other movies started copying them. The Shining has subtle messages you still can discover 30 years after, and it is a movie that plays with your inner fears of solitude, isolation, the unknown, etc. While Hide and Seek put together all the old tricks used a hundred times before in other movies: childish voice melody, big house in the middle of nowhere, creepy kid drawing creepy things, strange things in the basement, cracking doors, bloody written walls, cats jumping off the closet, sheriff walking around with a flashlight, music box, destroyed dolls, clock waking you up at the same time every night, etc, etc... and the worst: the overused twist taken from Psycho, The Sixth Sense, Fightclub, Memento, Identity, Secret Window and a ton more. Sorry but the only redeeming feature in Hide and Seek was Dakota, and she was the only reason for me to watch this. I like the movie as it is, it is entertaining but no comparison with The Shining, please.

The Shining without doubt.

No one can come close to Nicholson playing the insane Jack Torrance.

"The Shining" is visually stunning, even if other areas (like Nicholson's acting) may be lacking. "Hide and Seek" is just a pedestrian effort all around.

reply

Really? You have to ask?

The Shining.

Obviously.
