Am I the only one who thought the finger sucking was a little weird?
.
shareNo. I thought it was very weird and out of place.
shareExtremely off-base.
shareYea that scene was a plot hole. In a post Covid world, I doubt he would suck on her fingers
shareJust watched for the first time in years, that scene definitely felt a bit weird.
shareIt could've been even weirder. I read that Bond was supposed to have sucked all of Vesper's fingers, but afterwards it seemed a bit over-the-top, so they backed it down to just two fingers. I think the extra finger sucks were edited out.
Also, we can thank Daniel Craig for making the scene as a whole a little less strange in another respect. The script called for Vesper to be in her bra and panties in the shower scene. Craig made the point that Vesper wouldn't have taken the time in her emotional state to undress down to underwear. They shot the scene like he suggested. If she'd been in her bra and panties only, the tone of the scene might've become sexual when the finger sucking commenced, and some women would be screaming how dare he do that because he's obviously trying to get Vesper in bed in her fragile state!
The more I watch the movie (and that's A LOT of times) the finger-sucking does make me squirm a bit. I think its inclusion in the movie is more symbolic than anything. She felt the guilt of blood on her hands, so Bond symbolically took that guilt onto himself, well, his mouth to be specific. I'd like to think the writers intentionally made it an allusion to Lady Macbeth and her "Out damned spot!" scene.
All in all, even with the finger stuff, the scene does what it's supposed to do. It shows Bond is aware of Vesper's torment after she, a civilian, entered his espionage world and the bad and ugly it entails. He wants to comfort her. Entering the shower in his tux and plopping himself down right up next to her, placing his arm on her shoulder as an offering of connection, then later placing his full hand on her forehead in a shielding embrace tells her he understands her pain without a word.
You're the only one. It was perfectly fine behavior
shareYou'd probably hate CAPE FEAR then with Juliette Lewis sucking Deniro's fingers in that 1 scene
