shareAlan Conway (born Eddie Alan Jablowsky in Whitechapel, London in 1934; died December 5, 1998) became known for impersonating the film director Stanley Kubrick. Conway and his wife were travel agents with offices in Harrow, Muswell Hill and London.
At the age of 13 Conway was sent to borstal for theft. During the 1980s Conway left his wife for a gay lover, who later died of AIDS. Conway's business soon collapsed and he fell into alcoholism. Alan Conway's son, Martin Conway, was taken away by social services and placed in a children's home when he was 16.
Conway's impersonations took place during the early 1990s, by which time Kubrick had become very reclusive. He convinced several actors that he was the famed director, promised them roles in films and dined out on his claims.
Frank Rich, a famed Broadway critic for The New York Times, was taken in by Conway's act in Joe Allen's restaurant when they invited Conway and his friends to join him at his table. Frank Rich was so taken with Conway's act that he later said that he thought Stanley Kubrick was gay after experiencing Conway's conduct. Frank Rich and his journalist friends were excited at the prospect of an exclusive interview with 'Stanley Kubrick' but later found out that he was in fact an impostor after contacting Warner Brothers.
Kubrick's lawyer found out that there was someone impersonating him and when he informed Stanley Kubrick of the impostor, Kubrick was said to be fascinated by the idea. Stanley Kubrick's wife, Christiane Kubrick, was less taken with the idea as she later reflected 'It was an absolute nightmare. This strange doppelganger who was pretending to be Stanley. Can you imagine the horror?'[1]
Conway's story of impersonating Stanley Kubrick became the basis for the film Colour Me Kubrick starring John Malkovich.
..... if the screen writer had used some of the material provided about the early life of the con man.
Good thing the acting was quite wonderful from the lead and supportings.
This does not make sense. Is this really based on a true story?
shareYes, it is based on a true story. The poster before ladyin9090, the one who wrote in italics, posted the entire Wikipedia biography of Alan Conway. So, yes, he is real.
"Heavy lies the crown."
Jack Nicholson, The Departed
yes it real
Alan Conway was a con man and a pretty good impersonator. In the 90's he goes around impersonating Kubrick and gets away with it becasue by that time Kubrick had become somewhat reclusive. Conway even fools famed critic Frank Rich (who had actually met Kubrick before).
Apparently when Kubrick found out about it he thought it was interesting, but his wife wasn't amused.
Conway ended up dying in Dec.98; Kubrick died 3 months later.

The story goes like this: Alan Conway was a regular guy who had a wife and kid and owned a travel agency. He leaves his wife for a gay lover, the business goes belly up; the kid gets put in foster care, the lover dies of AIDS, and Conway becomes an alcoholic.
Apparently Conway was also a bit of a con and a pretty good impersonator. In the 1990's he goes around and fools a LOT of people (including famed critic Frank Rich) into thinking that he is Stanley Kubrick. He even offered roles to famous actors. The reason he gets away with it because by that time Kubrick had become a bit of a recluse.
Conway died of a heart attack in 1998; Kubrick died three months later.
I still think it's amazing he got away with it. I don't think it was difficult to find pictures of SK at the time but he was not in production or had a film out so he may as well have been dead for the general public has but a 6 month memory, if that. SK's assistant spoke in a 'Movieline' article around the time of Eyes Wide Shut about finding the Frank Rich piece. SK had employed him to go through the massive amounts articles about him as famous people are wont to do for slander and copyright etc. That's when the stuff hit the fan.

That's true.
In contrast to the movie, what Alan Conway did was simply the most disgraceful act he could have committed against SK. I mean, if he liked SK, then he is destroying the credibility of someone he is supposed to like. And obviously, if he is doesn't like SK, then why would I like him. It's seems like any way you slice it, he is profiting off of someone else's work. Just like the guy in the bar, I would be extremely crestfallen and pissed off, if I ever met him. I would know just by his mannerisms that he wasn't SK.
How anyone believed Conway I will never know.
He looked nothing at all like Kubrick.
allthewine asks: "How anyone believed Conway I will never know.'
Because Conway had a con way.
