Donnie Darko is my favorite movie! I like to call these "Movies that Mess with your Mind" although I prefer your term for it. I would also recommend:

The Fall
Identity
Memento
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Mulholland Drive/ Lost Highway
Waking the Dead (the one w/ Billy Crudup & Jennifer Connelly)
Swimming Pool
Being John Malkovich
A Clockwork Orange
Truman Show
Dark City
Existenz

The following movies are in a similar vein(If you like any of these movies you may like European movies in general as they seem to love making these films.)

Sweet Hereafter
Amores Perros
Neverending Story
Closer

Since I cant see it and some people have already stretched the subject of "Rubber reality films" quit alot... I will too...

L'apartment
Wicker Park

Strangely enough they are the same and I didnt realise until I read it somewhere... just shows how much Hollywood mistreats their sources.

Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others.

S. Darko (2009) - forgettable Donnie Darko sequel
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1231277/

The Butterfly Effect 3 (2009) - not bad

and the film on the marquee in Donnie Darko:
The Last Temptation of Christ (1988)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095497/

I just saw Mulholland Dr. for the first time, and it's a lot like Stay. I'm in the minority, though, as I prefer Stay. It's easier to understand. Both are great movies, though
