Right? The intensity he always brings to the table turned out to be perfect for a villain. Wish he did more of it. Hell, it's a shame he's completely shifted over to semi-comedic action man.

Yeah, he's a super-talented dude. Magnolia is incredible (not just for Cruise), and he's got versatility, skill, and dedication. I'm not 100% sure why he stopped taking anything other than "action hero" roles, but my two theories are (a) he's in a bit of a mid-life crisis/denial about his age, or (b) he got sick of trying for an Oscar, Lions for Lambs was his last "Oscar Bait" role, and when that got lukewarm reviews he went, "Screw it!" and just went off to do M:I sequels and sci-fi flicks like Oblivion and Edge of Tomorrow.

For what it's worth, I also really like Oblivion and Edge of Tomorrow. But it is too bad that we don't get to see the guy who was funny in Risky Business and Jerry Maguire, who was dangerous in Collateral and Interview with the Vampire, and who spoke to all the tragedy of life in Magnolia and Born on the Fourth of July.

Yeah, I would say it's his best role in an action film. I might consider one of his dramatic roles to be superior though.

The movie gods just smacked me in the head with a DVD copy of The Seventh Seal for not reminding them of his role in Magnolia, which might be tied with Vincent in Collateral :/

The movie gods were right to berate you with Swedish art cinema; Magnolia is Cruise's best role for sure. He goes deeper, and is more vulnerable in that role than in any other I've seen him in.

IMO it's Collateral or Born on Fourth July.

Rest of his roles are average, at best. I'm not a fan.

I would consider Lestat to be his greatest villain. I understand he was only a villain in that role for a few scenes but he was definitely not a good guy in any part of the film.

He was great. I wish he'd gotten the Oscar nom instead of Jamie Foxx. Also isn't this and Interview with the Vampire his only villain roles? Never seen him as a villain in anything else besides those.

Pretty sure Collateral is his only true villain role.

I remember in Taps he played a bit of a psycho, but wouldn’t classify the role as a villain

Interview with a Vampire was horror movie so I don’t count that.

I guess you could count LeStat if you want, but to me he's a tweener bad-guy. He was more like a shitty parent, than a "true" villain.

If you compare the characters of Vincent (Collateral) to LeStat (IWAV) you can see what I mean by a "true" villain. Most horror films don't give the antagonist much depth ...but I'll concede that LeStat was given more depth than most horror film antagonists.
