Why doesn't cruise play more villainous roles?
I absolutely loved him in this. Easily one my absolute favorite roles of his. He was so freaking good as Vincent
Would really love to see him as an actual bad guy in a film again.

Maybe because it would reflect badly on his church..?
shareReally? I mean it's just a fictional character. As in, totally made up.
What doesn't reflect badly on his church? Scientology is a criminal organization ... maybe he gets his fill of being the bad guy being in the Church of Scientology?
shareAccording to the official Church of Scientology website, "the effects of medical and psychiatric drugs, whether painkillers, tranquilizers or 'antidepressants', are as disastrous" as illegal drugshttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientology#Rejection_of_psychology_and_psychiatry share
If you have no actual comment I have no actual time for you ... sorry.

Tom isn't going to ditch scientology. It's the only thing that helped him with his dyslexia .
shareYou can play bad guys as long as they get their comeuppance in the film
shareCruise acts as his own producer. He determines the projects he takes part in and the roles he plays.

He seems to choose roles that'll be "fun" for him, typically because they'll be challenging.
That places heavy emphasis on film like "Top Gun" and the Mission: Impossible series because of the frankly insane stunts he gets to do.
But he also learned to shoot pool well enough to do most of his own shots in "Color of Money," and insisted he have "fat hands" and be able to dance in "Tropic Thunder."
So maybe it's not the villain or hero aspect so much as whether a specific part will pose an epic challenge calling for enormous effort.
Call him what you want, "risk averse" he is not.
I agree. This is one of his best roles.
shareCruise is really good at playing a villain! If I had talked about him a year ago, I would've just said that he always plays good guys. I was surprised when I found out he does have some bad guy roles. Not only does he have them, but he's actually good at it.
I actually wish he played the bad guy more often. Maybe because he doesn't do it very often. Although I haven't seen "Collateral," I watched "Interview With The Vampire" recently and was blown away. He disappeared into that role even though I kept reminding myself it was Tom Cruise because I could scarcely believe it.
he probably did not enjoy making this film. and film did not make as much moneys as anticipate. that might explain why he never play bad man again.
his agent probably tell him "audience want to see nice tom. they dont like bad tom as much" and tom and his bank manager listen to him.
Collateral made 220 million on a 65m budget. And his performance in the film was critically acclaimed.
I can't comment on whether he enjoyed making the film or not. Cause I have no freaking idea.
yes but most of moneys it made was outside usa - it grosses 100m in usa and 120 in foreign. majority of foreign moneys goes most to foreign theaters.
for film to be big success it need to make double it budget in usa. 100m returns on 65m budget in usa is good but not mega smashes.
his performance in collateral was acclaim yes but film was flat and i would guess cruise does not like playing bad man
