WHY ! ? ! ?

when people ask me what bands im into/like, and i tell them quite a few; of varied genres, they always freak when i say daft punk.

they say that theyre music is "dance crap", personally i hate almost every dance song i've ever heard, but daft punk are different.

does anybody else find this when your friends ask you similar questions?

reply

oh yeah, same here. Alot of people i know have said that.

reply

You kind of made your point by yourself. You said:"... personally I hate almost every dance song I've ever heard ...". People that aren't into this kind of stuff don't know about Daft Punk, for them it's just another crappy dance music band. You need to engage in this to see that Daft Punk is different, but those people won't to that, so they won't see a difference.

And don't give too much credit for the opinion of other people ;-)

hehe o yah :P

anyways... this is a great film and i have forced many of my friends(against there will) to watch it and then tell me daft punk are rubbish.

most of them love the film and find themselves asking to watch it/borrow it from me :D haha in ther face!

DP are definitely ahead of the times.... one listen to Human After All will prove that... does that album sound like any other "dance" record out in 2005not even close.... people tend to lump them into "dancecrap", but they never settled to be like everyone else.... everyone waxed poetic about Mylo's "drop the pressure" last year.... true, it was def slammin, with a great hook, but he practically lifted DP's sound circa Discovery... 5 years after the fact... DP are already eons past what everyone else is churning out these days.....

reply

They aren't "ahead of their time"... DP's music sounds like 70s/80s disco/dance music. It sounds like old music with a modern twist.

americans... don't know *beep* about electronic music.. it's great how everything that sounds vaguely like "dance" music is called electronica.
daft punk is filter house for gods sake, or french house if you insist. but there are like 50 other sub-genres of so called electronica. putting everything into one category is an insult.

reply

To be fair, it's not really possible to keep on top of all the sub genres for someone who doesn't engage in the music scene.

Average listener will call it all "dance" and you'll have to bite your lip

Like some people who mix rap with hip-hop. Not necessarily the same, but "similar enough" to be seen as one for some people.

Either case, the movie was great.

reply

I think it's easier to just separate it into for example Techno, House, Trance, and Jungle. That way all the sub genres still fit in there. You don't call it electronica, dance, or techno.

i know i know. i wish was born in some other country so i would know *beep* about electronic music. i bet it would help me lose weight, help be a better person and ultimately be able to have the in depth knowledge as someone like you. someone who calls daft punk, "filter house". wowie wow wow, before today i never knew what "filter house" was.

i listen to, "music". sorry if that offends anyone.

Just because he's passionate about his taste in music is no reason to be rude to him.

His point is well made. Personally, I love "Funky House", and it really gets on my nerves when someone who has no clue clue about electronically made music likens Funky House, Filter House, French House...whatever, to the Crazy Frog theme, just because they each have a beat and use synthetic sounds. This is just as dumb as saying Linkin Park and The Beatles play the same type of music because both bands use guitars and drums.

Interstellar ROCKS!

I know this guy posted in 2006, but stop slamming Americans and their music taste dude, you have no idea what Americans listen to over here. I am American and French and LOVE Daft punk. I would not argue that house music is much more developed over the pond, but do not lump everyone together like you say we are doing with the "kinds of house". a little hypocritical wouldn't you say?

We techno-lovers have it especially hard in Texas, where country and gospel reigns.

I know what you I live in spring,tx and it is hard. Unless you listen country, rap or heavy metal you are cosindered inferior and not a REAL man. I listen to many types of music but my favorite band of all time is the cure and everyone says they are just bunch of drugged up whiny brits. It is really pretty sad to have to live in the south and like many different types of music as I do. By the way I have all 18 cure albums that includes the live albums, the john peel sessions and japanese whispers. I love ladytron, imogen heap, frou frou, feist, dido and daft punk.

well i lIve in New Jersey and most of the people out here like at least a little Bit of House and techno...but me and my brother on the other hand can't get enough

What I find really sad is that not only do people cringe when I say "Daft Punk," or "Eiffel 65," or "Gigi D'Agostino," but people cringe when I say "techno" or "house" or "electronica." But I live 20 minutes outside of Detroit. Wasn't house born there? It seems all the good techno has flown to Europe. And I don't think it's coming back.

reply

i really like daft punk but most of my friends don't even know who they are!
when i went to a new school every one looked at me like i was insane when i said i liked daft punk because they didn't know them!

now i let some of my frineds listen to there cd's and they like it!!!!

reply

I think what really turns people off about techno is that, yes, techno pieces tend to run longer than your usual acoustic piece (or anything that pretends to be acoustic.) Admittedly, I tend to associate "long" with "bloated."

well I like daft punk and so do some of my friends but not all of them, I don't care what style of music they are or if everyone I know loves them or even if I would be considered weird by the rest of the city, it doesn't matter. Daft punk aren't my usual taste in music but I like them anyway and I tend to be fairly conservative about my music tastes (shows how good daft punk are eh?)the cure are good speaking as a non-drugged but probably whiny brit. and fenthered, I have seen some of your art, it's very good and very funny, keep it up.

Thank you! I always love a compliment!

House was not born in Detroit.

Techno (or at least the coinword 'Techno') was.

Look up a movie on DVD called HIGH TECH SOUL.

It's a documentary on Techno music. Very interesting stuff and a great movie. :)

I think part of it is how blatant the 'repeats' of the sample can be sometimes.

reply

I couldn't give a rats ass what my friends or anybody thinks of Daft Punk. I love them and I don't care what they think.

reply

who cares what people think, if you like it then you like it! go ahead and dance your ass off! thats what i do! :D

Okie... Ummm... I've always seen Daft Punk as "Dance Crap", and that is what they are. Because they're CRAPPY at making PURE Dance music... what they ARE is one of the best experimental fusion music artists of the 20th century. Listening to their music, especially Discovery, you see that their music isn't strictly dance music OR electronica of ANY type. One More Time, Digital Love, and a few others are actually composed from other mainstream genres like R&B, Classical, Rock, and Pop music, and then fed through some simple mixing techniques and compressions. This is not much different than the sampling that was done in the late 80's and early 90's with early hip-hop artists like Run DMC, MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice, and Tone Loc. Even extending to the point of Eminem sampling Dido and Aerosmith for HIS work. They're riding the heels of other artists and not changing much beyond their own voice.

When someone says to YOU "Daft Punk is just Dance Crap", you can easily come back with "They're better artists than the crap that you listen to. At least they've got the creativity to create their own original works, rather than to endlessly sample and copy the work of those that came before them."

I've seen this movie, and it's quite a lot of fun to watch. It's rare you get a lame plot for a movie that is so interesting to watch in terms of Daft Punk's take on it.
