Any suggestions for similar movies?
I would say:

1) Mulholland Dr. (2001)
2) Donnie Darko (2001)
3) 12 monkeys (1995)
5) Memento (2000)

Please share your suggestions. Thanks!

Jacob's Ladder (1990)

American Psycho

Identity

I'm guessing you mean for "psychological thrillers".

You might enjoy these too:

Gothika (2003)
The Butterfly Effect (2004)
The Others (2001)
White Noise (2005)
The Sixth Sense (1999) --> though it's been years since I saw that one...

Also check out the Final Destination trilogy (2000/2003/2006) (though the first two are the best of the three).

IMO "The Jacket" is a straight-up remake of Adrian Lyne's "Jacob's Ladder" - they only changed the setting of the war from Vietnam to Iraq.

Hmm, I took this film to be about someone in their own personal hell but somehow effects a better reality or derives a purpose from it. In that narrow interpretation, I would say:

1) Pan's Labyrinth
2) Atonement
3) Life is Beautiful
None of my suggestions have time travel though. Donnie Darko and Butterfly Effect are definitely in that vein.

I can understand why you ask the question, because when you look at the movie recommendations by imdb, they are to say the least friggin' messed up.

I mean, Lethal Weapon 2? Dawn of the Dead? WTF? How are these movies in any way, even remotely similar to The Jacket?

I remember I once sent in Donnie Darko and Butterfly Effect as movie recommendations if you liked The Jacket, but they ignored that. Instead, they fill the recommendation list with random crap.

reply

You are so right. I never look up the recomendations any more. They should chenge the system because most of the time it comes up with titles totally irrelevant.

reply

Those aren't recommendations that are intended to be like the film in question, they're merely movies that people who liked the film in question also enjoyed. I'll give it a parallel example using music; I like punk rock, real punk, not this current bubble gum Blink 182, Green Day bulls*it, but I also enjoy quite a bit of classic rock, jazz and post-punk. If you were looking at, say, a Minor Threat page and it said 'people who enjoyed this also like: Miles Davis, ELO, Led Zeppelin, etc.', would you be equally as baffled to those recommendations? It's about diversity of taste.

I'd say, a little bit of Somewhere in Time and 12 Monkeys, a little of Jacob's Ladder (but definitely not a remake), and a little of Altered States. But really, without having seen some of the other films mentioned, I have to say The Jacket is rather unique.

How about David Lynch's Stay?

reply

The Machinist had some similarities to this as well.

reply

yes i was going to suggest the machinist myself.

reply

I agree and was going to add the Machinist. It also had that slightly "off" feeling about it like the Jacket that made it semi-horror. Like, it gave me the creeps for some reason without being a horror film. great psychological thiller much like the Jacket. Also having lots of theories.

reply

Please, the Machinist was complete garbage and had nothing redeeming about it. Spare me meditations on that piece of crap. Ick!!

reply

really? I very much enjoyed the machinist

reply

@zeletto : WHAT !? Stay is NOT a Lynch film pal !

it's a poor attempt by a young director at ripping him off !

reply

I've never heard of a Lynch movie called Stay...is that right?

reply

Final (2001)
K-PAX (2001)
Hombre Mirando al Sudeste (1986)
12 Monkeys (1995)

reply

The two most similar movies I've seen to this are "Stay" and "Jacob's Ladder".

This film seems to take from both of them. Gosling was TREMENDOUS in Stay as was Brody in The Jacket. Stay is the better movie in my opinion, but that's like me saying I'll take a free Mercedes over a free BMW if you get my drift.

reply

Final (2001) and 12 Monkeys.

reply

What about the Fountain? A fantastic movie about the urge to change the implacable destiny.
