Thanks for the list I'll look at some of them.

I enjoyed Flame and Citron (Flammen und Citronen, 2008), it has English subtitles, it's about the Danish resistance. I just watched it again on-line, I'd give it 9 out of 10.

This movie doesn't have any war scenes, but I'd say it's one of the greatest movies I've ever seen, again with English subtitles: The Lives of Others, IMDB rates it 8.5. MY SUGGESTION: Do not read IMDB's description or ANYTHING about it beforehand! Just watch it first. (It's about East Germany agent of the Secret Police, that's enough to pique your interest). Just watch it on my recommendation. :)

I have since starting this thread acquired both of those movies and they are excellent! I especially liked Das Leben der Anderen (the lives of others) as Communist DDR is very intriguing to say the least. If you have any other suggestions on those type of movies (Fuhrer Ex, Wie Feuer und Flamme are two pretty good ones) please give them! Flammen und Citronen was also a really well made film though I would not rate it as high as you did. =) Thanks for the suggestions all the same and to all that have added great titles as this list grows and grows - THANK YOU! Keep them coming!

Where are the movies Stalingrad and The Tin Drum?

reply

I mentioned Stalingrad on my first post I think, it's my favorite one along with Der Untergang. There's also the new Russian produced Stalingrad from 2013-2014 but I didn't like it very much except for the fact it also had Thomas Kretschmann from the 1993 version. Also a 1950's movie titled Stalingrad, Do you Dogs want to Live Forever - a West Germa production.

I've never seen The Tin Drum, I may have to check that one out...

Dear pro aris et focis,
I would be a little worried if the majority of your leisure hours was consumed by watching films and documentaries related to that period in history where man's inhumanity to man reached its zenith.Hopefully you enjoy some light entertainment as well?

reply

Have you ever been married? With children? Well if you have then you know how important any time you get to yourself is. One of the things I enjoy with my time alone is to read about history and watch documentaries or movies on certain eras in history.

I am pushing 40 years old in a year, give me a break haha ;) By the way, recommend anything? =P

reply

Situation well understood. Cannot recommend any additional titles to the large selection already suggested. As a former history teacher of many years, must admit that, documentary-wise, there seems to be little that is novel in regards to people and events of WWII and conversely, when new footage is uncovered, it is usually most absorbing. Even the recent broadcast of WWII documentaries in colour, added to my knowledge and appreciation of that time in history.Cheers.

There's been quite a few documentaries released in the last 10-15 years that are excellent. One of the more recent ones is a 6 hour doc entitled The Greatest Story Never Told - The Story Of Adolf Hitler. Though some topics the producer really reaches in 'humanizing' Adolf Hitler, most of it is really good. Mostly facts that are usually purposely 'forgotten' to be told by western historians are presented. His political accomplishments and helping to end the Great Depression, turning the economy around in Germany and getting millions back to work (albeit through re arming) etc. etc. I shall have to make another thread on a documentary page and start up a list similar to this one but of documentaries...

reply

Just searched Suite Francaise and that sounds like one I'd like, thanks! Just when I think I own, or at least have seen, every single movie ever made on the subject.... a new one. Cheers! My collection has grown quite a bit since that list in the first post - thanks to EVERYONE in the thread. =)

I don't think anyone's added Escape From Sobibor, so I'll put it here.

Great true story!

reply

Good one, that's with Rutger Hauer right? I actually have added that one to my list since I created this thread... I REALLY enjoy his movie Soldier Of Orange. Thanks! I'm afraid I have every single movie based on WWII but then again I may not so keep them coming!
