All quiet on the Western front.(Lew Aires)Very old film about the First world war.

'In which we serve'.

Of course 'Ice cold in Alex'.

I suppose you could include the Series 'Band of brothers', 'The Pacific' and the German series 'Generation war "Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter". All excellent.

and finally 'The cruel sea'.

He's not the Messiah! He's a very naughty boy..

reply

I have Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter, it is EXCELLENT! Thnx for the other suggestions TO ALL! WOW keep them all coming I have definitely learned of quite a few I haven't seen....

reply

sorry if someone already mentinoed this:

Lacomb, Lucien (about young french collaborator)

the best years of our lives (after the war returning home)

the siege of leningrad is fairly recent it was ok

several recent documentary series are pretty good (history/military channel)

nazis: evolution of evil

nazi collaborators

hitler's bodyguard

and there was a french documentary miniseries in 4 parts that they showed year or so ago (dubbed in english) but i can't remmeber the title.

reply

Thanks for the suggestions- Lacomb and The Best Years of Our Lives are new to me, I will check them out.

Also, YES DOCUMENTARIES too!! I have a really nice collection of documentaries as well. The only two French ones that I have that are really good are: Einsatzgruppen, Les Commandos de la Mort and another I cannot think of the name off hand but it is about Klaus Barbie. The Life and Times of Klaus Barbie perhaps? If you think of the name of the doc. you are referring to please reply with them! Thanks again!

the French documentary I was thiking of is Apocalypse: The Second World War. It was shown in English a year or so ago on some obscure cable channel in the US.

also did someone mention Force 10 from Navaronne or The Guns of Navaronne

reply

Is it all color footage or colorized footage? I have one entitled Apocalypse: The Rise of Hitler. At least I think that is the title

reply

THANK YOU so much for this recommendation! I have not seen this and is now #1 on my to-get list.

reply

no problem. at least some of it is on youtube, i think.

reply

I got it and I have to say it is one of the better documentaries out there because it uses all colorized footage. I prefer the colorized footage it just gives more realism and depth to it. Thnx again for the recommendation it is one of my best documentary series now!

reply

while slightly more niche , watch Powell and Pressburger film's, being watching a few lately and they less well known and some direct propaganda but such as. these film's are less about action and shooting but a more celebral perspective

the Life and Death of Colonel blimp
The Small Back Room
a Matter of Life and Death
One of our aircraft is missing
49th Parallel
A Canterbury Tale
the Spy in Black
Ill Met by Moonlight

also The Silver Fleet (not a P&P film)

reply

The Small Back Room is a wonderful forgotten gem! I'm so glad someone remembers it!
I haven't seen The Spy In Black or Ill Met By Moonlight yet. :::excited:::
Thanks for these lesser known suggestions!

I got a lot of recommendations for Come and See...it wasn't bad at all. Really good movie. Thanks! Keep em coming, documentaries too. I'll do an updated list here when I get time. This collection has become excellent with everyone's help. I love my collection of movies.

Apologies if its already mentioned. I checked random posts.

1. Enemy at the gates
2. Sophie's choice

Sophie's choice is not exactly about WWII but it does have some scenes. I would recommend to watch for those scene at least. You will not regret.

reply

Seen 1 but not 2. Will check out Sophies Choice on your word alone, I usually never regret it when listening to others recommendations. =) Thanks to ALL who have contributed to this awesome thread!

Pro - In addition to all the wonderful movies listed, I would recommend Night and Fog. About a year ago I watched it on youtube. It's harrowing and will not be easily forgotten

reply

On my list as of now, thank you. Will post after I get around to acquiring and watching it.

reply

Pro - Yes, please let me know what you think. It packs the horror of war into only one hour iirc. For sheer entertainment, my favorite already mentioned is The Great Escape, which features two of the best actors James Garner and Richard Attenbourough. Although they both recently passed, thank heavens we will always have them on film. Your thread is so interesting and popular. I am getting many good viewing ideas as I read through.
