I can't help but to love this movie, even though it's not really great

I mean, I don't know what it is. It's such a guilty pleasure movie. I can watch it over and over, and still enjoy it just as much. The exorcism scene in the beginning with the mirror is especially fantastic to me. Incredibly enjoyable flick!

me too. it's not a good movie at all. it's really dull and the story is really whatever. but it's really pretty movie, lol. I don't regret spending money on buying a ticket. you can tell the director is a music video director, it doesn't really feel like a movie movie, it's more of a series of connected 'moments' and 'scenes', very aesthetically pleasing, but as a whole it felt disjointed and weird. too much direct messaging to the audience, if you know what I mean.

it is a very sexy movie though! there's a very pleasing sensuality throughout the entire film that I liked very much. but that's not enough to make a decent movie if everything else is whatever. it is very well casted though. everyone in it was a good fit.

For me, Constantine has become one of those films I simply must watch if I come across it. Like Jaws or The God Father. Shaun of the Dead also. And I must say, I love the performance of the Devil (Peter Stormare). This guy is crazy-good whether he's playing Satan or a Cosmonaut in Armegeddon. Dare I say he did a better job than Viggo Mortensen as Satan in The Prophecy? Nah... apples and oranges. Viggo's Satan was much darker; but Peter's was just as commited if not more so. I just wish they didn't kill off Shiah Lebeouff's charachter. I just heard tonight that NBC is making a series of Constantine. I'll give it a chance; but I'll likely stick to the movie.

Same for me. I don't get why people rate this movie so low. It has awesome visuals and themes. I guess the comic fanatics rate it so low, but besides it being different from the comic, it's an awesome "fantasy in modern world" movie and Keanu is great as the *beep* exorcist.

I've always liked this film... it's dark, moody, atmospheric, and really well-done. In addition, the visuals are impressive and the performances are very good (that's right, I think Keanu Reeves did a convincing job). So yeah, it's a good movie in my book.

This seems to be slowly, ever so slowly, getting more love from people.

Purists of the comics will always hate it, and other snobby film geeks simply dismiss it as a bland CGI action fest, which is far from the truth. It just seems people hate CGI, not matter how well the story is told or how good the action is. If there is a dollop of CGI, then all of a sudden a film is crap. I despise CGI snobs.

This is a pretty bold movie in the fact that it had a big budget, and dealt with some pretty harsh subject matter. It's rather bleak, sinister and violent for a big budget studio comic book film. What I really like about it, is that it IS a horror movie-just with a blockbuster budget. There is action, but not a lot of it and it's very quick when it happens. The cast is universally strong and the plot is well told and doesn't spell everything out for out for you right away. In all honestly, it's one of the best biblical themed horror films of the decade.

On the contrary, the visual effects is widely considered one of its strong points.
It's the script that's the problem and Keanu. He just wasn't made for this character. He's only good in certain types of roles due to his lack of range.

You really think Keanu did bad in this movie? I think he plays a great character. Limited, laconic, bad ass like always and unlike the comic book Constantine but great in itself.

And I also like the script - the story itself is great. Lots of twists and suspension and interesting scenes and mysterious things happening. How he cons Lucifer is totally faithful to the comics imho.

reply

Yeap. He was just very wooden. As per usual, with Keanu.

Totally agree. Watched it years ago and I could barely remember the plot. Came across the name and watched it again, it's really very enjoyable throughout. Decent plot + decent action scenes.

You mean you can't help but love this movie even though most people think it sucks.

Sometimes it's hard to resist the mobs but hey, if you enjoy something, even though everyone thinks it's bad (regardless of whether it's bad or not really), it doesn't matter what others think. It's not a guilty pleasure, it's just a pleasure

Personally I think the movie is one of those rare great popcorn movies (and even rarer gothic action movies) that manages to entertain and bring a great story to life. Some will say the story is too simple, others that it's too complicated. Some just hate Keanu Reeves. Some say it's not faithful to the comic book etc.
It's still a great movie.
