Why does everyone hate this?

I might be wrong but I watched this years ago on a plane and I liked it. It has that Me, You, and Everyone You know quality. But what are some negatives?

I am talking to you Jedediah, you're fired.

Because majority of people in the world are shallow and stupid?

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for enough good men to do nothing.

I think what causes such polarized opinions is that the response most viewers will have falls into one of the following categories:

A) enjoying the movie for what it is, a light-hearted comedy that just happens to involve some of the deeper existentialist questions, which may be good for a momentary chin scratch but are otherwise secondary to the humour, or

B) somehow interpreting it as a complex dissection of the nature of humanity, which will either, upon belief that they are among the select few that 'get it', cause people's egos to inflate and make grandly inane and arrogant comments on the message board, or to dismiss the entire experience as being "pretentious".

This is one of the only films in the last decade that has lodged in my memory and that I'm genuinely very fond of. It does poke fun at kinda everything, which I think viewers might not grasp, i.e. it's not really to be taken seriously.
Seems like there were a lot of good films coming out around this time around the middle of that decade. Closer was extraordinary.

Because it is boring and silly.

The movie is uselessly long and cannot be called accurate. The strongest scenes in this film are actually very unrealistic and the depiction of the story is passable. But like so much else in the film it felt thrown together to satisfy a silly audience
