kurt russell ruined the character

anyone find russell's portrayal of Herb Brooks way over the top? russell is/was a fine actor, but this part just wasnt for him. it seemed forced most of the time and didnt suit his temperament at all. denzel washington did a far better job as a Boone in remember the titans.

I have never met Herb, but from everything I have read and seen about him I think Kurt was right on. Herb was exactly how he was portrayed. He was a livewire, over the top kind of guy who was very passionate about hockey. And he was always a great ambassador for the game. He was one of the best without a doubt, and Kurt did him justice. It's a shame he didn't get at least a nom for this role.

No way Kurt Russell was over the top. He brought just the right amount of realism to his portrayal. Denzel was good as Boone...but when it comes down to it...Kurt Russell gave the better performance. I loved both Titans and Miracle...but Miracle is the better film...not by much...but there ya go.

I'll add my 2 cents to your moronic comment as well. Unfortunately, Russell has been plagued by the "action" star stigma for most of his career - similar to others like Willis who are excellent actors but rarely get taken seriously.

Russell's immersion into this role blew me away. He embodied Herb Brooks and really showed off his acting chops. I remember the 1980 winter Olympics well and knew full well the outcome. I was also familiar with the back story from "miracle on ice". With all due respect to Karl Malden, I think Russell brought an incredibly powerful performance to the picture, heightened by his unyielding desire to get the story - and the man - correct. Herb Brooks as well as other members of the original 1980 team were involved throughout the entire production of the movie. It was obvious that Russell not only did his homework but really immersed himself into Brook's character.

What's sad is that Russell got next to no recognition for this role. I'm not sure why he didn't, but it makes me wonder if he had, would he have taken on more roles like this afterward.

We Minnesotans know Russell nailed this role. You are beyond wrong.

Who do you think Herb Brooks was?!!!! Some made-up fantasy in your mind??!!! I hope you are drunk/tripping, because if your comment reflects how you really think . . . . you have a serious reality problem.

Really? I thought he nailed it.

Just by saying "ruined the character" you lose me.. Coach Brooks was not a "character" he was a real.. And quite frankly an incredible man. I'm a Minnesotan born and raised.. And while I never got the pleasure to meet Coach Brooks.. I have friends who either knew him, went to school with him, or were coached by him. And never ONCE did any of them say Mr. Russel's portrayal was off. They all praised him up and down. The accent was spot on for an older generation Minnesotan.. Our Minnesota accent is rapidly fading away.. You generally only hear it in the older folks.. Or extreme northern Minnesota. But his accent was genuinely spot on. The mannerisms, and overall feel.. I really felt as though they nailed the Minnesota thing..

I think he was excellent.

He was one of the few things in the film that felt like it would still have worked just as well in a less safe, vanilla, non-authorized biography type film.

That's because the real Herb Brooks WAS "over the top." He was very driven, passionate. People who knew him personally, including his family, friends, and the real life team members all agree that Kurt Russell WAS Herb Brooks.
