kurt russell ruined the character

anyone find russell's portrayal of Herb Brooks way over the top? russell is/was a fine actor, but this part just wasnt for him. it seemed forced most of the time and didnt suit his temperament at all. denzel washington did a far better job as a Boone in remember the titans.

Russell was awesome, he did an unbelievable job as Herb Brooks. You're nuts.

reply

Everyone including family and friends said Russell 'Nailed' his role as Brooks. That goes to show that there's an idiot post in virtually every forum.

reply

he also looked a lot like brooks
i thought he played the role very well

and that was the second time i got crabs....

reply

He should have got an Oscar nomination at the very least.

OP is going to be the minority on this one,

The same thing can't be said about Karl Malden's portrayal of Herb in the 1981 made-for-TV movie about the "Miracle on Ice".

What the? Are you NUTS? Kirt Russell "WAS" Herb Brooks. That is what a great actor with talent does! When you are watching that entire movie... you FORGET that you are even watching Kirt staring in a role... he BECAME Herb... The mannerisms, actions, acting, the accent, the passion...

THAT is what a great actor with the "art" of acting does... THAT is how great movies are made.... THAT is how you do it to win academy awards.....

Sadly, he was overlook for that nomination and the academy was crazy to have missed him and this entire movie... should of won for best movie... outstanding.

Are you from Minnesota? Did you ever see Coach Brooks in action? I'm guessing not. Russell nailed the role. The mannerisms, the accent, the attitude. The only role not true to form in the movie is Patti Brooks, who is a voluptuous, beautiful blonde. Patricia Clarkson is an average waif. But she nailed Patti Brook's attitude and support.

Not only is this the best sports movie of all time, in no small part on the decision by the producers to cast hockey players first, but because of Kurt Russell's performance. For you to say that he was "over the top" and "not for him" and "forced" is simply ignorant. This role may define his career. I suggest you have a preconceived notion of what Kurt Russell is to you. A "he-man." A "tough guy." Kurt Russell showed his acting abilities, especially in the scenes where he had to let Ralph Cox go as the last cut from the team, at the end of the team Christmas party at Doc's house, and when he returns home after that party and gets the note from his daughter Kelly stating "Daddy, we left the star for you. Love, Kelly."

Then the scene beneath the arena after beating the Soviets. His emotion. Finally conquering his demons.

This is Kurt Russell's finest moment. You missed the boat. Go back and watch it about 10 more times. And do some homework on the team and the state of U.S. hockey leading up to the game.

Are you from Minnesota? Brooks was from St. Paul. Russell's accent was an Iron Range accent. People on the Iron Range don't sound like people from St. Paul and people from St. Paul don't sound like people from the Iron Range. Other than that, I think he did a fantastic job. As far as the accent goes, he nailed the Iron Range version of a Minnesota accent, just not Herb Brooks' accent.

He was awesome, oscarworthy and his best performance ever.

Herb Brooks was over the top. Did you think the scene when the team had to perform Herbies in Norway was made up? I recommend reading Boys of Winter by Wayne Coffey. Herb Brooks was a hard-ass who made himself the common enemy which trumped any rivalry between Minnesota and Boston. And yet, we like him because he made things happen.

Herb Brooks was not your average guy. According to my dad, who went to Minnesota when Herb was coaching and caught a bunch of hockey games, he was exactly the way Kurt Russell portrayed him to be. Completely over-the-top, intense, and extremely good at his job. Kurt nailed it. I've also had the pleasure of talking to Rob McClanahan and Mike Eruzione, both of whom said Kurt was absolutely perfect as Herb.
