Anyone else dislike Bullock?

Watching this a second time, I'm reminded how much of a moody *beep* Bullock is. Irritates me every time he's on screen. And his relationship with Hickok was always awkward, seemed like they had a little schoolgirl crush on each other, always giving the other "the eyes".

With him and Wild Bill, It was mutual admiration and respect, and maybe a sense of understanding on some basic human level. Bullock is the best. He beats the sh*t out of people and does what he wants. And takes certain cock suckers by the ear. ;)

This.

Nope. Brilliant character and TO did a brilliant job portraying him. Iconic TV character, even 10 years later.

Love TO so I love the character. And I enjoyed the relationship between Bullock and Hickcock (so?). Father son mentor mentee thing happening. Really really disappointed when it ended.

I thought he acted like a jerk all the time.

I think Bullock was a perfectly crafted character in the sense that he was a good guy with some serious flaws which was one of the reasons it made the show brilliant. The old Hollywood trend of that characters were either completely good or completely bad had begun to wear off in the late 90s and early 2000s and brought better depth to the characters. It is all but a trend now as we see shows like Game of Thrones display the same type of grey characters conveying the message that life is not all black or white.

I'm re-watching the series now. You have hit all the marks. Hardly a character here is all bad or all good. Al is my favourite character. He scares the s(*t out of me, but he's a guy you cannot ignore.

A great show with brilliantly drawn characters.

Swearengen is by far the most interesting character on the show. You could say he is predominantly evil as he is interested in #1 first and foremost but displays remnants of a heart. He also has some of the most brilliantly written lines and McShane is absolutely perfect for the role. An all around great show and I am almost glad it got canceled before they got a chance to fk it up.

Deadwood (2004) - 10 outta 10 stars

I cannot disagree with you here. A couple of other shows I loved, just didn't know when to quit... (Community/Scrubs, amongst others)

The way the show displayed Swearengen's relationships was riveting. Just to mention a few, he and Dan, Trixie... EB... Silas... Bullock, Wu and of course, Jewel. Full of nuance, danger, sometimes respect, many times contempt and sometimes true fondness...

Oh, yeah, 10 outta 10, for me.

I didn't mind him, but he reminds me so much of John-Boy Walton (Richard Thomas).

He who conquers himself is mightier than he who conquers a city.

Watching this for the first time and I hate this guy. Its killing the show for me. Imagine Sol being this Dbags friend. He has no personality and simply acts like a ahole to everyone he encounters.

Bad choice of Actor becuase he doesnt have the chops to pull off the character in my opinion.

Started watching the show for Bullock and stayed for Wild Bill and Al. With Bill gone, Al was the sole reason to continue watching and he was brilliant without a doubt. After finishing S3, IMO Bullock is nothing but an egoistic prick who neither cares about justice nor for any of his "friends"

I'm not a Bullock fan either, but in the interest of fairness: Bullock went along with the killing of an innocent whore to placate Hearst - rather than allow Trixie to be taken. I'd say he cared enough for Star to go along with that plan even though it infuriated him to give Hearst anything at all.

This is what I don't get about Deadwood. The characters going against their nature like Bullock not serving justice, Al letting Hearst get away with his finger and so on. Maybe I didn't get the show/ its characters or maybe its a mess that got cancelled sooner. Before EB sold the hotel to Hearst and the reinforcements arrived Dan was just waiting for a nod from boss to take out this kaksuka. A western with practically no shootouts save for one or two. Mostly just some good throat cutting.
