Plane scene is the only thing worth watching

The plane rescue is an incredible scene. Action packed and intense.

But after that, nothing in this soap opera borefest gets anywhere close to that level. In fact, there’s no action at all.

Hard to believe Singer is the same guy who directed the excellent X-Men 1 and 2.

Agreed. It's very bizarre. For a comic book movie, there's not much in terms of spectacle. Even the third act disaster scene at the end is outclassed by any given Emmerich movie on autopilot.

There was an alternative opening scene where Superman is in space exploring the remains of Krypton. I know why they cut it. Because the rest of the movie couldn't live up to that scene. Except for the plane rescue which is one of the great superhero action scenes of all time.

reply

Wish they’d kept that opening scene.

There's some good moments but a little forgettable as they don't impact plot, like the heavily armed robbers (who you don't actually see get their comeuppance) and saving people from the Daily Planet Globe.

They're a bit weighed down by the slow stuff which is a shame overall I really liked this version of Superman and would have liked a sequel.

Closest we got was Routh in the Infinite Crisis episodes of the CW’s DC-related shows.

That scene is well done, and the only thing I like about the movie. I've rewatched that scene online several times, but I never rewatch the rest of the movie.

reply

Yes, Routh was channelling Christopher Reeve very well there. It was the height of his performance.

reply

Looking at the plane rescue makes you wonder why they didn't put in more action.

reply

Exactly!

reply

While lots of action doesn't make films great but it would've made SR more a commercial film than it is.

reply

yeah Hoping Gunn puts an easy to follow action scene with Donner/Comics HOPEFUL Superman

reply

What the film should've been ideally instead of a loose sequel to Superman 1&2, you wanted a plane rescue an adaptation of John Byrne's Man Of Steel.

reply

Thanks Singer and Spacey have ruined this movie for me

Since the Christopher Reeve movies ended we got newer takes, Lex Luthor is now an evil billionaire, and I think we have moved past the whole Lois loves Superman but not Clark and not knowing he's Superman as seen with Smallville, DCEU, Superman & Lois and My Adventures With Superman, which made this loose sequel take of Superman Returns pointless because it's a few decades behind to where people are with the character.
