Jason Schwartzman = HORRIBLE casting error

he just didn't work. if we're supposed to be endeared to jeremy in any way then his casting doesn't work. he had no redeeming qualities as played by mr. schwartzman. someone a little less smug and pompous (read anyone) would've served the story better.

reply

Oh no, i disagree. I thought he was perfect. Probably because in this roll he reminded me of one of my friends, which also matched the character. Oh well we all have different opinions.

reply

Wow, I think completely differently. I could not imagine anyone else in the part personally.

everyone...pretend to be normal

reply

I think Schwartzman was perfect for the role. The dynamic was perfect. In fact this movie pushed him to the top of my favorite young actors list. I think he really proved himself.

That's fate stealing away..

reply

I thought his character was supposed to be like that. he was great, imo, and the major component when it came to humour. I didn't think he was smug, more a little ignorant of how he is behaving. also a little stupid, but not in an annoying way.

reply

i'm actually very glad that his performance seems to ring true for a lot of people. i think he's a decent actor - just felt he was miscast. glad to see i'm in the minority.

reply

He was great in this movie

reply

jason schwartzman = perfect casting.

... and that was the second time I got crabs.

reply

honestly, his role was the only thing that kept me interested in what i thought was a bore fest otherwise...

reply

wow. totally disagree.

The characters in this movie are taken from life, thereby avoiding any movie stereotypes, and passing by manufactured "endearing characters".

I find Schwartzman's character endearing because he's real, and when I mean real I mean that I actually know guys like this, and the small characteristics within him are often taken from reality and placed in antagonists to make them seem more slimy. The truth is that guys like this, or guys that start off like this are really not that bad, and that's what the movie is showing. Real guys say stupid and creepy things bcz they are nervous or just don't know what to do bcz they are young and inexperienced; movies have taught us that, generally, guys like these are really just creeps inside and we should be scared of them, like this is a warning sign.

This movie breaks through that... feels very euro-50's-60's.

reply

I also disagree...i enjoyed the movie quite a bit and I think it was largely because of Jason Schwartzman. Everyone did a great job but he added some great sponteneity and humor to a movie that might have been a little too lonely and sad for me otherwise.

As the older man in real life, I can tell you that the entire gamut of emotions rings absolutely true EXCEPT for Steve's baffling lack of emotional energy.

She's perfect. She's young, she's beautiful, she's creative, she's funny, she's REAL with problems and challenges and wants and desires and hopes and dreams and yes he's older than her (twice as old, I'm estimating...) but she's clearly taken with him, and rather than giving his heart to her, he's too narcissistic or emotionally blasted to see the gift in front of him.

Why pursue her if he's not interested? That she'd respond to him, at all, is a miracle. He's an idiot. Steve Martin is a genius. His character is damaged, and while the final scene at the opening is SOMEWHAT redeeming, it's not enough.

If you find love, and character, and smarts, and creativity and passion, don't hesitate. Grab, hold, give thanks.

I loved Jason in this film, I couldn't imagine anyone else playing Jeremy.
I agree with some of you guys above; it was perfect casting!

I agree, he reminds me of a similar situation in NY, and I think someone who thinks he should act like George Clooney should go kill himself.

LOL

I, too, thoroughly enjoyed Jason Schwartzman's work in Shopgirl. His performance was my favorite aspect of the film.

reply

i completely understand where you're coming from. however, i don't think it is the fault of jason schwartzman but of the character itself. he made you constantly feel uncomfortable ("is this person really saying this?!")
-so are we gonna kiss of what
-search for baggies instead of condom
-and everything else he does
others that "fall for him" or find him the compelling character i have to strongly disagree with.

reply

Schwartzman is too weird looking to take seriously.

reply

'Weird looking' please explain yourself...
Jason is gorgeous and a great actor!
