I don't know why people hate this movie so much

I find it fast and exciting and a great mystery...as Ben Affleck is an engineer that sees his future and sends himself objects that help him at crucial points...between that concept and the John Woo chase scenes, the film is a decent watch every time I see it.

Perhaps it's because there are plot holes big enough to bury the White House in. Still, I enjoy the movie, too, even if it is pretty lame. It's a total popcorn movie, which doesn't make it bad, but can explain why some people don't like it.

reply

It's definitely underrated based on the reviews. Movie had great moments, pacing was good, story was solid and actors were excellent. What more do you want? I give it 8/10.

reply

i gave it a 4. the movie is pretty bad. huge plot holes, excessive music, excessive action scenes, pretty stupid stuff like the train going at the same speed as a man running and then he breaks the train remotely by putting a clip in the device. sorry for not being able to express myself better as english is not my first language. but this movie was really really bad directed

reply

Hey, I also gave this a 4 having watched a re-run last night! I live in Portugal and they show B movies a lot. But with stars like Affleck and Thurman this wasn't supposed to be a B movie??? It felt cheesey like one though. Overacting, overlong camera shots on the hero, 2D baddies, plot holes - why did Jennings fix the machine error when he'd come to destroy it anyhow? - and "excessive music, excessive action scenes, pretty stupid stuff like the train"

Shame, the concept was good - having the memory wiped and having to piece it all back together with the unrelated objects in the envelope - but it was obliterated by everything else. Another hour or so of my life wasted...

I agree with all that, plus bad acting and bad production values -- lousy photography and art direction. 2/10

Please put some dashes above your sig line so I won't think it's part of your dumb post.

I watched it three times. I thought it was good until last night because I finally gave it some thinking. I feel it's decent, a generic action movie. It should have been released in September or October instead. I don't know if those months are dump months or average months.

Quite a worthless movie indeed. The atrocious acting from Affleck and Thurman, the cheesiness, the seen-it-all-before story, the plot holes... and it's not barely fun or entertaining, only laghably mediocre.
4/10 from me. Can't believe its rating is 6.3  People truly are easy to please.

I'm not sure either. I watched it last night for the first time and I really enjoyed it. Who cares about plot holes? Sure, there are some movies where plot holes are an issue, but this isn't the type of movie that takes itself seriously enough to be in that category.

It was interesting, well paced, and fun. I had a good time and that's all I was really asking for.

reply

If you don't want an audience to take it seriously, you need to put in some laughs.

If you're going to take my comment completely out of context, then your response is completely irrelevant.

I said this isn't the type of movie that takes itself seriously enough to be concerned with plot holes. That's NOT the same thing as a movie that doesn't take itself seriously.

reply

I gave it a 7/10
it was entertaining nonesense.

reply

I gave it the same, it's not perfect but it's entertaining.

It's about as entertaining as Speed 2: Cruise Control.

All the above. Especially since this came out after Minority Report which was a good action movie and had a decent mystery, as well as spending some effort into creating a future world. Paycheck reminded me of the same lazy photography and production design as the 6th Day.

reply

I don't hate it but rather find it funny due to Ben Affleck's horrible acting. the scene where he got tasered looked like he was suffering from constipation.

reply

Ah, let me address that for you:

1) Bad acting
2) Horrible writing/too many plot holes to suspend disbelief even for cheesy sci-fi.
3) Poor cinematography that makes this feel like a made for TV movie.

Bear in mind that I have a higher tolerance for bad acting, horrible wtiting, and poor cinematography than most people I know, yet I still felt the way I did above after watching the movie (which I did for the first time yesterday). Perhaps I have less patience for these things as I get older, but I was not really entertained while watching this, and I'm perfectly happy checking my brain at the door and watching mindless entertainment that's so stupid its funny (i.e. Idiocracy), or with bad guys or plots so bad I'll watch it just for the fight scenes or special effects (i.e. Road House, Big Trouble in Little China). Or sci-fi that has such bad acting/writing that it's so bad it's good just to watch the train wreck (i.e. Battlefield Earth).

So despite all those examples, still thought this was a bad movie.

I didn't hate "Paycheck".
In the beginning I thought it was 7/10 but when it ended up being a generic action movie I settled on a 6/10 rating.

SPOILERS
* It starts out with an interesting premise (some of this from Philip K. Dick); about corporate espionage and memory wipes and seeing the future.
The clues also reminded me of a classic Hitchcock thriller especially "North By Northwest" with Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint.
- As the mystery went along in "Paycheck" I thought Afleck fit the part of the hero but Uma looked frumpy in almost the entire film. And imo she was overacting in almost all of her scenes.
But in spite of that the mystery with the objects unfolds in an interesting way.
That is until the action scenes.
In "North By Northwest" the action was classic/iconic; the crop duster plane trying to knock down Cary Grant in a corn field. And him and Saint running away at Mount Rushmore.
With "Paycheck" there is a generic car chase going after a motorcycle, a fight in a tunnel and then a shootout in a lab.
Run of the mill action.

* Overall an entertaining movie. Is it great or even that good? No. But still 6/10 imo.

BB ;-)

it is just in my opinion - imo - 🌈

reply

For me the action feels pretty tacked on and is dragged out too long, also there are moments where it feels a bit like a TV movie. The actors are fine and Woo is a good director but few things really gel well together in this.
