Great film... probably more sophisticated than some viewers would like.

I think it's probably more sophisticated (without being up it's own arse) than many viewers would appreciate. I find it strange that people expect films be made just for them, rather than accept the work as the offering it is intended as.

The film is superbly written, shot, lighted, acted... just brilliant across the board.

And funny to boot. Every character had their own likes and dislikes (Wayans was playing character here people, he's supposed to be annoying).

Off beat? Perhaps to some. But it's a unique entertainment and clearly a work of art.

If you didn't like this film, how about as an experiment, you wait 10 years and see it again? Then let us know how you feel.

Agreed. I really liked it and I'm curious why so many people dislike it.

Perhaps the Coens felt they had to make their version different, to not just repeat the Mackendrick film's story and feel. So they made a farce instead of the deadpan comedy of the original, which is all right. But many changes are clearly for the worse. Why, for instance, the introductory scenes to show us that these crooks are incompetent? In the original we first see these sinister characters as they arrive to the landlady's house one (or two) at a time, and these scenes are marvelous. The original Ladykillers actually has more of the Coen brothers spirit than their own version has. Some new ideas, however, are inspired, such as the scene with Tom Hanks under the bed. But on the whole I'd say this is the least sophisticated of the Coens' body of work so far.

I agree.

It took multiple viewings for me to appreciate it.

Loved it in the first go. Haven't changed my mind after several viewings. Nothing mainstream about it except for casting a casting a mainstream lead who came up with anything but a mainstream performance.

Just watched it again, over 3 years after starting this thread. Have to say I still enjoyed it immensely! :)

Truly a beautiful piece of art, one that stands the test of time (so far!), full of intrigue, certain tragedy and much comedy! It's so funny while also nuanced & very accessible.

Much has changed in my life since starting this thread; and my views have evolved on many things. As a result, enjoyed this film in new ways this time around; to me that means the film makers did a good job.

Am glad they took the time to make this :)

Just wanted to share :)
