I think it's probably more sophisticated (without being up it's own arse) than many viewers would appreciate. I find it strange that people expect films be made just for them, rather than accept the work as the offering it is intended as.
The film is superbly written, shot, lighted, acted... just brilliant across the board.
And funny to boot. Every character had their own likes and dislikes (Wayans was playing character here people, he's supposed to be annoying).
Off beat? Perhaps to some. But it's a unique entertainment and clearly a work of art.
If you didn't like this film, how about as an experiment, you wait 10 years and see it again? Then let us know how you feel.
I totally agree with Casemon. I gave this movie a 9. If I had seen the older version of this movie I might have rated this movie at 8. I was very entertained with the distinct variety of characters, the good music, a very polished production over all and mostly because of its brand of comedy that appeals to many, but not all people. A future classic in my opinion as well. I would like to know how this movie would rate amongst people with average and sub-par IQ's compared to people with IQ's that are slightly above average and above. Maybe one day IMDB will implement this idea in the future. I know that I would find such a feature very useful. For example, I love comedies and I might have avoided seeing the movie Club Dread which I found utterly dreadful. I doubt that many Mensa members love this movie. - Just my personal wish, please comment if you agree.
Though I think finding new ways to separate yourself from others (whether with IQ, or Mensa, or whatever), says more about your emotional needs than any person you are trying to separate yourself from.
My overall take on this film, is that it's playful fun and it may take a slightly evolved psyche to appreciate, but has other merits as well.
I agree again with your last sentence. As to your first comments, I just wish to say that I forgot my pill in the morning, so I am so sorry. I must go now, my security blanket is calling me. I still stick to the fact that I would like such an option available. Call me a stat nut, a human psychology nut, a person that wants to avoid bad movies or an emotional wreck. I don't care. It's just my two cents, and I believe that everyone is entitled to express their opinions without subtle "attacks". Perhaps we should be examining you, sir or maddam. I must have hit a nerve when I "dissed" the movie Club Dread. I am a bit perplexed, but I have to remind myself that their are many different types of people in the world that I am successfully co-mingling with believe it or not. And if you wish to know I am not a Mensa member or a genius, and I never claimed to be. I know that I am not taking the higher road here because I have used subtle "attacks" on you now, but I feel that I have to turn your mirror around, so that you can get a better look at yourself. I am not perfect and you can go right ahead and say whatever you want. I just hope that you learn something and I wish nothing but the best for you in this life. I am not going to respond further. Have a good day.
My apologies srdondinero, I sincerely meant no offense. I only wished to express an observation (it's up to you to decide if it applies to you or not).
At least we can agree on the film :) And even though I do not know you, I too wish the best for you.
I agree it is a terrific movie. I wouldn't call it great but it's very good. I think most of the negative comments are from people who either loved the original, were offended by the language, or who just don't get a lot of the humor.
I actually saw the original after seeing this version and thought the Coen's version was better.
Despite this possibly being the Coens' "worst" film, it still IS a Coen Brother's film and that alone gives it a chache amongst the pantheon. The Coen's worst would still stand up against most American comedies.
My biggest complaint is that it seems to be an overall attempt to go commercial by aiming as broad as possible. Mainly, tho, it just wasn't as inspired as most of their work. A remake of a classic and a chance to work with Hanks was what got it made.
Idiocyncratic? Yes. Quirky and unpredictable? Ceertainly. And, as always, everyone in the cast seems to be having fun.
So, despite it being the lowest moment in their stellar, unprecidented careers, it is still a finely and distinctly crafted entertainment.
I plan to take the 10 year test too and see it again, after I've forgotten most of it. 5 years to go.

To casemon - no, I don't think so. I'm quite certain I don't like it, and I don't change my opinion about films. If I change my mind, I'll let you know.
