Shockingly Underrated

I've heard for years how this movie isn't very good and probably the Coen Brothers worst but I just watched it last night and honestly I LOVED this movie. I thought it was very funny and I thought Irma P. Hall was just fantastic in it as well as Tom Hanks. Now I can't compare it to the original since I haven't seen it (maybe that's why a lot of people don't like it?) but as a stand alone film I really liked it.

I just watched it today for the first time on starz. I agree with you, it's not perfect but very entertaining. Well done visually too!

I think it's one of the most underrated movies ever made

I saw the film when it first came out and didn't like it. However, i have been rewatching a lot of older Coen Bros. films so thought i would give this a second chance. I don't think it's underrated at all, i think the mixed reviews are spot on. It's not a bad film at all by any stretch of the imagination. It's well crafted, well acted etc. But if you watch this next to, say O Brother, it pales in comparison. I think it just falls flat in several areas, particularly the script. I didn't laugh once, not even a small chuckle. So if you compare it to the other dark comedies from the Coen's, i think the negative reviews are justified.

The original (1955) with Alec Guinness and Peter Sellers was great. The remake was not a film I cared for.

Its an amazing movie in every way.

I just couldnt help thinking Tom Hanks' role should have been Tim Curry

Tim Curry definitely would have been a better choice. Your suggestion makes so much sense and I will have to watch the movie again and envision Curry's mannerisms and facial expressions instead of Hank's. Watching Hank's performance bugged me and I couldn't put my finger on what it was or why.

Yes, I agree about this film being hugely underrated. I don't get it, frankly. I almost feel there's some sort of occult reason this movie isn't popular, like it rubs people the wrong way on some socio-political level. But if so, I can't imagine why. I love this film, is all I know for sure.

The first time I saw it, I didn't like it very much. My brother told me to watch it again and give it another chance. I did, and the more I see it, the more I like it

It is definitely a movie that is an acquired taste. The very first time I saw it I didn't really know what to make of it. There were some very funny scenes, but you aren't sure you should be laughing at them. The dog scene is a clear example of this scenario. You don't really know whether to laugh or not. On my second viewing I came to the conclusion that the film was a black comedy in the truest sense of the words.
