Kid's Story and World Record. Worst plot, weird animation style...

reply

Hm, it seems as if most people here hated "World Record". I thought it was pretty good actually. The art was very different and it also seemed to capture each of the characters in a stupendous way. I particularly liked the look of the agents too.

I liked the concept that World Record was based on, but the colors were unappealing, as were the grotesque design of the main characters' faces. There were a couple shots in it that I liked though. But I think it came across overall as dull and a bit obnoxious.

I really liked the look of Program, although the substance of the "plot" felt lame.

I think a lot of the content felt boldly self-conscious. I didn't like Beyond because it felt slight, to a perhaps pretentious degree. Detective Story felt stylized to a level unsupportable by its substance, leaving it feeling pretentious as well.

I really didn't like Rennaissance I & II because of the plot. I was disappointed by the reasons given for what ultimately happened to humanity, because it didn't address the issue of robots feeling desire. Every human-like action a robot does is simply a simulation that they've been programmed with. If it was something equal to genuine organic human emotions that have gradually evolved over thousands of years, it would be something supernatural, like a virgin birth miraculously conceived. The story simply takes for granted that robots had desire. That desire ultimately being the basis of the whole Matrix universe left me feeling disappointed.

One of the things I liked which Reloaded introduced was the concept of rogue software-beings existing in the Matrix, but independently of its purpose. Along those lines, Matriculated was my favorite because I liked the concept of a splinter group of over-ground real-world dwelling humans who are pursuing their own agenda of "recruiting" machines as allies. I also liked its visuals the best, and I liked the end, where the machine has apparently chosen to aid humanity and carry on the work that Alexa was doing when the story started, even though the humans have been killed.

Yeah, I think they almost hate it due to its art-style rather than any other reason they could call.

For me, World Record is one of most solid one in Animatrix. Style is unique in many of them, and in World Record, I didn't find any trouble about art-style either. Their styles in each ep all great in their own way.

Least interesting in term of story and plot whether is Final Flight of the Osiris or The Program. I mean the former one is good quality in 3D technical animation aspect but other than that... not really has anything else to tell. The latter one was nice in anime Japanese 2D style but was way too simple compare to the rest. One betray the other and in the end, it was all fake, a training session?

I think both of ones I mentioned above more relevant to the original movie but because of that very reason, they're weaker than the rest in Animatrix. They're too regular, too normal which we saw plenty times in the matrix series itself. The other eps are more interesting and IMO done better.

Wow, there's so much agreement here! :-)

World Record, Beyond, Matriculated, 2nd Renaissance have all been called best and worse....I actually like them all. Some of them were bizarre in an anime-like way. I didn't mind relevancy that much. I wasn't expecting the secrets of the films to be revealed. I didn't really like the last two films anyway.

Beyond is my favorite. World Record is my least favorite.

Lol Final Flight of the Osiris. It's impressive that it looks so real - for animation, that is - and obviously its plot is the most relevant to the Matrix story, but the beginning with the stripping is very ridiculous lol. Enjoyable though ;-)

I loved Second Renaissance. It looks great, the story is wonderfully constructed, it sounds great and it flows perfectly. More importantly, it's intelligent, though I've gathered that some disagree. Humans are idiots. We violate our environment, we take our lives and everyone else's for granted and we have a long history of it that shows no sign whatsoever of ending. It doesn't stretch my imagination too far to believe that humans would exterminate 'property' to protect their lifestyles. Nor that we would desperately destroy the sky in order to win a losing battle. After all we have huge arsenals of nuclear weapons. What on earth are they for?

First time I saw Kid's Story I didn't like it. Couple of years later I like it far more, simply because I've never seen anything like it. I imagine it might give me a headache if it was longer because of the scribbled look, but one I'd put up with to carry on watching because it looks fascinating. I didn't like the character in Reloaded and Revolutions anyway (all the 'Neo, I believe' stuff before pulling the trigger just annoyed me), but in this he's more interesting 'cos he's got guts. You'd have to, to run from agents after all. I like the story: an ordinary computer geek escapes the mundane through an ultimate expression of faith.

Every other story does not need to be included, it's true, they don't contribute to the Matrix trilogy. Since when did they have to? Why does dialogue have to move the plot forward?

Program is a retelling of the Cypher morale but with a different perspective. Cypher wished to leave 'reality' because he was sick of it, not because he was necessarily happier in the Matrix. Duo is expressing the relativist value of taking the blue pill. It's a wise argument, one I agree with. It doesn't have told, but it's enjoyable, it's one of my favourites.

World Record LOOKS STUNNING. How were the colors "unappealing, as were the grotesque design of the main characters' faces"? It looks great, as stills I'd love have them to put up on walls! At its simplist it's a story about a 100 metre sprint in just under 9 seconds. How cool is that? An athlete attempts to push himself beyond his physical body, unknowingly frees himself from the Matrix but is imprisioned again, and yet still holds on to his will. Its a powerful story, and powerful animation.

Beyond has to be my favourite, though it hasn't always been. It's a great idea: why should everyone who catches a glimpse of the Matrix's true nature then wish to free themselves? It's one of the few that does look like it was actually hand-drawn, and thus the CGI elements look very obvious, but it looks lovely, with cracked light bulbs flickering, lone shadows playing on the ground, indoor rain, spinning feathers before the dove has flown. It's clearly made for the joy of drawing, painting, just for the joy of creating art, and I love it for that.

A Detective Story is probably my least favourite, thus I have less to say about it. It's a nice idea, combining film noir with anime, and I always enjoy it. I think it's just 'cos I don't like Trinity much lol.

Matriculated is a bit daft maybe, but it looks great. The people make me think of old Philip Ridley books, all the illustrations done by Chris Riddell. As for the 'why use some psychedelic matrix to convert the mind of machine?' idea, I understand that this new matrix is an expression of the human mind: colourful and variant, sometimes somewhat odd. The machine first evolves into a more humanoid form to navigate this strange envirnoment, where individuality reins rather than uniform rules (like gravity etc). When the bug branches out in the cube I understand it to mean the multiplying, virus-like (note Agent Smith's philosophies of humanity) nature of machines. The evolved walker recognises that the multiplying branches will engulf it and, having been disconnected to other machines by being put into the matrix, reacts in an individualist way: it attempts to escape and survive. The humans take advantage of this moment and save it and show it a world that doesn't involve machine-like qualities. Well, that's how I interpreted it anyway.

I don't think there is a worst story. They're all intelligent, well constructed, understated masterpieces made for anime lovers. They don't really make much sense otherwise.

Least liked: Program - There's no story, the artwork has its own style but it doesn't appeal to me

Most liked: Beyond - Artistic, appealing in a gentle way. Matrixulated - The ending makes it even greater, though the visuals are sketchy XD

In-between - Pretty much all the rest, Kid's Story is a bit pretentious for me so I never liked it much, just tolerable

Well although the final flight of the osiris included impressive animation they might aswell have just used live action, making it my least favourite. Half of it just looked like something from the films so...

I suppose the matrix has a lot of fans who identified to some extent about the high school story, thus the interest.

the best story in my opinion is world record--- easily.

the worst? all the episodes are good.

I can't pick a worst story either. All of the stories are good and interesting and I would love to see more Matrix related anime. The possibilities and story lines are endless and would make for some really cool shorts. It would be awesome if the top animators would come together every few years and make another animatrix.

For me it's Program for not containing a certain meaning in my eyes combined with the fact that I personally don't like the look quiet much.
In World Record, which I consider to be the second worst episode, you see at least some facts about the interaction man - matrix and how the agents tend to react to it.
Well ... when I say it's like the worst story it's more or less too rude anyway, cuz I wouldn't like to call any of the episodes 'bad', those are only the two ones I personally like less. All together the Animatrix collection is really a cool thing to watch, I'd really like to see more :D

Either World Record or that one about the haunted house and the girl looking for her cat. Can't remember the name.
