what happened to sean william scott in this movie?

he plays stifler in a whole new level in this movie. he is on the verge of being psychotic, manic and just plain out insane, he actually scared me.
what happened? a directorial decision?

That laugh got annoying as *beep* after every single line of his. It wasn't even funny. He came like a special needs child with turrets.
