1 and 2 are pretty give or take but I really liked 4 the more I watch it. The 3rd is by FAR the worst.

The problem with the 3rd movie was despite Stifler being a lovable character that he was given too much focus. The only problem was excluding many of the characters from the first 2 films particularly Oz and Kevin hardly having anything to do.

I consider it as the best MOVIE of the four, and strangely, almost with the exact order than you got: 3, 2, 1, and finally, the worse, 4, if we can even call that a movie.
4 is, imho, just a collection of unrelated sketches, if not just cameos, that does not MAKE a MOVIE. On the other hand, AW is built as a movie, which can stand alone, as well as within a trilogy, as example. For me, if a character has too much focus or if other characters from other movies are not there, those are NOT an acceptable criteria to judge about a given movie, all by ITSELF. It only matters if you consider the WHOLE set of all the (related) movies.

American Wedding probably has the most laughs, but 2 is my favorite overall. It has the best balance.

AP2 was just too much of the same. American Wedding was smart in leaving Oz and Heather out of it. Unfortunately Kevin was still around to be pointless but the drama with Finch and Stifler was great as was Jim and his fiance's story.
Reunion shoulda be been better...it feels like more of a failure than AP2...but it's still more enjoyable.

American Wedding has the most laughs and I agree with the poster who said it's a movie that can stand alone. In fact, Wedding was the first one I saw and I couldn't believe the opening. The expression on Jim's dad's face was hilarious!
Another funny moment happened when Cadence came up behind Stifler as he was talking about what he was going to do to her. Embarrassed, he asks "Have you been there long?" And she imitates his sucking sounds and milking a miniature cow's udders thing. When I stopped laughing I wondered how many takes it took to get that.
About the Wedding Cake, I thought NO ONE has that much pubic hair!!!
Yes, the dog poop scene was gross but the lines surrounding it were funny.

I saw this in theatres when it first came out in 2003, I didn't think it was all that great back then either. I watched the 1st American Pie a few days ago and it is still a classic that will never get old. But this one, Yeah I think was the worst.. with 4 being close. 2 was just another remake of 1.
But Wedding was terrible. I think they just threw a bunch of ideas around and tried to make the rest of the movie around it. It turned into almost a 3 stooges parody.

-Stifler boning Jim's grandma
-Mistaken sex scene with Jim and stifler with dogs
They turned up stifler way too much in this one. They went for a really, broad, dumb audience
I love the American Pie movies (the big 4, not the crappy side movies) but I completely agree. My order goes:
1 is my favourite
2/4 are tied
3 is somewhat enjoyable with some laughs but nowhere near as good as the others IMO. It was all just too much. It was so OTT. Plus, in the other movies Stifler was a dick but he was still funny and likable to watch whereas this one just took the character so overboard and it just destroyed it.

Is AW a "bad" movie, no, I wouldn't say that, it has it's moments, but it's pretty clearly the worst of the 4. It's just too much of Stifler being an over the top jackass scene after scene after scene
