Every hollywood remake of brillant british films ends up being <crap>!!!!!
Heres what happens.
Bad director can't think of a film to make so he goes and finds a good british film and thinks "i'll put more guns and explosions in it and change the script enough that it makes no sence and the get some crappy actors, oh yeah and set it in the USA. That'll make a good film that millions of tastless people will go and see."
Im British, I enjoyed the Original as quite a slick crime film, But I enjoyed the remake much more in the sense that is was more fast paced and more updated with the times.
In general though I have to say, Apart from a select few, British movies are pretty crap ..

Some films just don't NEED to be remade.
The Italian Job is a classic british comedy with an outlandish chase scene.
The American remake is just a lame dollar-a-dozen Vin Diesel-wannabe action flick.
