Any modern western recommondations?

I am a big fan of the genre and I really like the the direction westerns have taken in the past 20 years. There have been some great films I would hold up to the great masterpieces of the genre like Shane, the Searchers or The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. Unforgiven, Open Range, Appaloosa..just to name a few. Ive also really enjoyed the TV offerings as well such as Lonesome Dove (a classic), Quick and the Dead (Sam Elliot version) and Crossfire Trail.

However, its seems to have been ages since a new western has been made and I have been longing for one for a while. Any recommendations on lesser known films I may have missed?

Thanks.

Valdez Is Coming.

Very underrated.

The thorn defends the rose, yet it is peaceful and does not seek conflict.

I like Burt's westerns, and his Valdez is excellent (just watched it from my own collection last week), however, my favorite Burt film of this period is Robert Aldrich's Ulzana's Raid, released the following year I believe. However, if we consider films made in the 1970s to be "modern" westerns, then I'd recommend Don Siegel's The Shootist, known to fans as John Wayne's last film.

Depends on how you define "Western." A couple of realistic Westerns set in the 1940s would be "All the Pretty Horses," and "The Hi-Lo Country." Another, set in the 1950s would be "Lonely Are the Brave."

"The Proposition" is a great Australian western. "3:10 To Yuma" with Bale/Crowe is also up there.

You should see Silverado (1985), a Lawrence Kasdan film, and incidentally Kevin Costner's first western. It was one of the first westerns to come along in a long time, and possibly the catalyst that brought the westerns genre back into popularity. In addition to Kevin Costner (who was offered the supporting role of Jake by Kasdan to make up for his role in the Big chill being cut during editing), Silverado had a stellar cast of top stars at the time. Kevin Kline, Scott Glenn, Danny Glover, Rosanna Arquette, John Cleese, Jeff Goldblum, Brian Dennehy, Linda Hunt, Lynn Whitfield, Jeff Fahey, Earl Hindman and Richard Jenkins all do a fine job. The dialog in this film is rich with quote worthy line after quote worthy line. From the opening sequence, which is a true Western classic, to the end of the movie, I think you will find that this film does not disappoint the viewer at any point. Interesting trivia about Silverado: the set they built for this movie was actually used to film several of the movies already listed. It is my favorite western and worth watching again and again.

Another movie you might be interested in is The Claim (2000).

"Open Range" is a great western, and would stand out even if it had been made in the golden age of the late 1940s and 1950s. My favorite western of more recent years has been the Netflix television miniseries "Godless".
