Like a lot of people, my favorites include Tombstone, Open Range, Young Guns II, Shane and Dances with Wolves. Lonesome Dove was an excellent mini-series.
But here are some other of my favorite Westerns I haven't seen listed:
1) Geronimo 2) Monte Walsh (a great made-for-TV movie) 3) They Died with their Boots On (an Errol Flynn/Olivia de Havilland classic) 4) Dodge City (another Flynn/de Havilland movie with a 'feel good' ending) 5) Son of Paleface (a lot of fun with Bob Hope, Roy Rogers and Jane Russell)
i cant believe nobody likes tombstone. my top 5 would be: 1. Good bad and ugly 2. Tombstone 3. Open Range 4. Unforgiven 5. Maverick (yes, maverick. i guess ill consider it a western since its in the western section of my local hollywood video and blockbuster.
That's because Tombstone SUCKS!!!, it's an overrated piece sh!t(that needs to be flushed down the toilet) with crappy writing and horrible acting, Russell is terrible as a gold digging whiney sissy Earp, Paxton was a huge miscast, Dana Dalaney is just plain stupid as a woman whose only goal in life is to have room service, and John Tenney is horrible. The only good thing about the film is Val Kilmer, and that's not enough to make up for what's so bad about the film.
"Don't mind me, man, I'm just effen with ya…" - Janis Joplin
Open Range A Fistful of Dollars Tombstone Ride With The Devil McLintock! The Shootist True Grit North to Alaska Dead Man Go West (got to put one comedy in there)
Yojimbo - No, it's not set in the American west. No, it's not in English. No, it doesn't have cowboys or Indians. But this movie was inspired by American Westerns, and if you watch it, you'll see that it captures the feel of a Western better than almost any other movie that was ever made. If you've seen A Fistful Of Dollars, you know the story, and I think Yojimbo does it a little better, and did it first.
And finally, Deadwood. Television has rarely been better. childintime-1, your analysis of the characterization, acting, and plot of this fine show could not be farther off the mark.
These are still the best movie westerns I ever saw because the stories and the people locked in as one for me: 1. High Noon 2. Red River 3. She Wore a Yellow Ribbon 4. Ride the High Country 5. My Darling Clementine
