3) The Unforgiven/Open Range

4) The Quick And The Dead

5) Wyatt Earp

John Wayne is my (and my Dad's) favorite actor. My top five westerns (as defined by IMDB.com) are

1) The Searchers
2) Red River (I can't believe no one else has mentioned this classic)
3) Stagecoach
4) Treasure of the Sierra Madre
5) Hud

If #s 4 & 5 don't strike you as "westerns," then I replace them with

4) High Noon
5) Shane

My other classic westerns (in alpha order) are

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Dances with Wolves, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Ox-Bow Incident, Ride the High Country, Ruggles of Red Gap, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, and The Wild Bunch.

My Personal Top 15 (for what it's worth):

1) Unforgiven
2) Dances With Wolves
3) Rio Bravo
4) Quigley Down Under
5) Open Range
6) The Quick And The Dead (the one with Sam Elliot and Kate Capshaw)
7) High Plains Drifter
8) Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
9) Rio Bravo
10) Tombstone
11) Pale Rider
12) The Outlaw Josey Wales
13) The Magnificent Seven
14) High Noon
15) Silverado

I never thought "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" was that great a movie (or any of the spaghetti westerns for that matter). Nor, did I like "Once Upon a time in the West" (maybe there's a connection here).

I also don't believe "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" is classified as a western.

I haven't seen "The Searchers" so I can't comment on it.

I'm only going to write my top 5:

1. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
2. The Wild Bunch
3. The Outlaw Josey Wales
4. The Magnificent Seven
5. Unforgiven

Again, these are just my personal favorites. I'm sure there are better ones than these.

Well, I admit it, I'm not a big western fan, so these are the only ones I've seen, in order of what I liked best to what I liked least.

1. Tombstone - excellent movie with great acting, story and action, with Val Kilmer in a role that's my favorite that he's done.

2. Open Range- I've noticed several posts that say this is a bad movie, but I enjoyed it a lot and Robert Duvall is a great actor.

3. Hidalgo - I consider this a western and it is a rollicking good time, if a little bit cheesy at times, but Mortensen is always good.

4. Dances with Wolves - since this is considered a western by some of you people, I'll say it is too. I found it depressing, but a good movie nonetheless.

5. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - no offense to Redford, whom I like, but this movie just didn't ring with me.

I'm still trying to get a hold of Unforgiven and a few others too.
