Natalie is "fat"??

I love this movie but I never understood why they had to add in a jab about a perfectly slim woman being called "chubby". so uncalled for!

reply

The whole point of labeling her fat was to make Hugh Grant's character seem reasonable and align him with the agreeing viewer.

The fat references didn't stop with Natalie. The Portuguese maid said she couldn't eat biscuits because she would get fat like her sister. Then Emma Thompson's character talked about dieting too. Not sure what was the point of it all. They never shot much of Natalie below the waist so it was tough to see if she even had "thunderous thighs". The woman who made that remark was not so skinny either, so that was odd.

Billy Bob Skeevy President didn't seem to mind Nat's curves either. I wonder if this was all some post-Monica Lewinsky era inbred humor? IDK, all a bit confusing nowadays in the Kardashian bulbous buttocks era.

Emma had to wear a fat suit for this movie.

reply

She's huge! She could be mistaken for a manatee!

reply

I would ride that manatee for days.

It has been standard in Hollywood to have attractive actresses play unattractive characters. See, for example, Dorothy McGuire’s Laura in The Enchanted Cottage (1945), who is supposed to be homely; Katherine Hepburn’s Lizzie in The Rainmaker (1956), who is supposed to be plain; Betsy Blair’s Clara in Marty (1955), who is supposed to be a dog; and Lili Taylor’s Rose in Dogfight (1991), who is supposed to be ugly. Picking actresses that were genuinely fat or ugly to play these romantic roles would have been more realistic, but doing so would have resulted in movies that no one wanted to see.

reply

I don't think she's meant to be unattractive, just not skinny. and she isn't.

reply

Not skinny and definitely not fat. Her weight is evenly distributed.

reply

The script called for a chubby girl, yet honestly? Hugh Grant is going to fall for a fatty?

The darling, perfectly proportioned girl who played Natalie has a round face. I guess that made her "plump" enough for the PM.

This annoys me every year. There's nothing fat about her.

reply

Natalie ISN'T fat. I will say, I can't stand the character, Annie.

reply

Not sure why it annoys people. It's obvious the woman who said it, suspected Hugh grant has a crush on Natalie, so she was just being bitchy.

reply

Yeah, I figured Annie kind of had a thing for the Prime Minister as well, so was putting down Natalie to make herself feel better.

reply

Natalie was chubby is correct. So?

reply

She's just right. Knightly is a skeleton with leather stretched over it.
