We NEED a sequel NOW!

This movie was a fine movie when it came out in 2003.

15 years later, it stands out in filmmaking history as a real masterpiece.

The crap that comes out today would certainly pale in comparison to a properly made sequel.

What are Weir and Crowe waiting to manufacture a sequel? Do we need to sign a petition?

reply

What is needed is that they need to feel confident that it will make enough money to pay for itself and bring in a profit.

reply

Ok but there are many projects made on the will of their stars to do it, it's not just a budget analisys by some accountant. In this case, I named Weir and Crowe because they are the stars of this project, what are they waiting for?
Just add another big name as an antagonist and we're set for shooting.
Doesn't have to cost 200 mil, just get some good writer to make a good script from the other books. And please, make a TRUE sequel, not #2 in a trilogy, who needs that?

PS: I know for a fact that shooting on water is hell, so maybe they had their bad experience and wish not to repeat it. I haven't read anything from the backstage of M&C, I don't know if they loved it or hated it, maybe that's the real reason.
Although, judging from the awesome result, they all loved it and acted as a real crew in the sea!

reply

I hope you're right and it gets done. I love the books and the movie.

reply

Really really hope this happens! Loved the first film. If the sequel does happen it’d be fantastic if they were to retain the original cast because I thought they were all excellent. And of course we need Weir to direct, that’s a given.

Bring it on I say!

reply

Although I think this is a fantastic film, I think it was too slow for the younger audience hence the mediocre box office results. I wish we could get a sequel, but I don't think the studio can get the returns they want.

reply

Fuck the studios!
They make tons of money with the superhero and remake crap they churn out everyday.
Can't they make, for ONCE, a movie about making a GOOD movie?

And it's a sequel, they love those anyway!

Just DO IT PROPERLY, and forget about modern audiences and tweens and appealing to the masses. Even if the returns are not great, just make another one as good and honest as the first one, and you'll be happy too, Hollywood bigwig!

I agree completely, but don't hold your breath hoping for Hollyweird to do something right for a change.

Unlike a lot of movies, I think this film is very well suited to a late entry sequel wrapping the end of Aubrey's sailing career. It certainly wouldn't be a hit film, but I think it would make some money. And studios do love to show off their prestige muscles now and then. Hollywood hasn't turned out a big realistic sea movie in a long while.

reply

That's exactly what I'm hoping for: a studio with BALLS that makes it properly and honestly, not aiming for big profits but just to remind us (and themselves) that they can still make a decent movie if they want to.

A film I'd not mind viewing, but it would seem so anticlimactic being the only other film in the series to chart Aubrey's naval trajectory. Even pre-COVID, I figured the chances of Weir, Crowe and company making a sequel or prequel were pretty slim. It's my understanding that there was talk for a few years after this film of doing a sequel but that no studio could agree on who should take up the project, and that they also figured it wouldn't be worth it since this movie, as it is, evidently didn't do as well as they hoped at the box office.

But perhaps one day Weir could make a prequel about a young Jack Aubrey. He better cast someone who can pass for a young Russell Crowe and who is as evocative of him, in all the right ways, as De Niro was of Brando in The Godfather 2.

There already was a sequel:

I was thinking about something a bit more epic than that...

I agree Master and Commander is a really good film and it's a pity it didn't find it's audience. But I can't see a sequel being made and the best we can hope for is a reboot as a substantial series - much the way they did with Hornblower 20 years ago.

reply

Why not a sequel? TV series are cheap and THEY ARE NOT CINEMA.
This is great epic Cinema, with the capital C.

Other than Crowe getting slimmer, even if I posted this 3 years ago, a sequel would still be much appreciated and could be legit, with slightly older characters.
And it will find its audience, lots of people got to love Master and Commander on DVD or tv after they missed it in cinemas, and they will all be interested in the sequel.

reply

I don't think it will happen because it's been too long since the original - which looks like it lost a lot of money, it would be an expensive film to make and Crowe, even a slimmed down one, probably isn't the big name he was when M&C was made.
It's a fair point that many people discovered the film after it's cinema release - myself included - but I just don't think that would guarantee the kind of audience they'd need to justify it to the money men.

reply

I know all that. But the money man can go fuck himself and his momma too!

Not all movies have to be 1bil blockbusters, maybe some asshole in hollywood might be decent enough to try and make a movie because it could turn out good, once in a while.

reply

Well OK then, I guess we can dream.

reply

Agreed.

No sequel. A loose follow-up may be possible though. I did enjoy this film at the cinema. Crowe was still hot back then off his Oscar from Gladiator but those days are gone.
