Maybe the best movie in the series.

Not the most crucial one but when it comes to book adaptation, directing, acting - it is the best one.

I found the acting too angsty.

Another thing I found annoying is Harry was screaming and crying about Sirius killing Harry's parents for nearly the whole year ("HE WAS THEIR FRIEND" etc etc), but as soon as he found out it was Peter he didn't really care. For the rest of the movies he had zero hatred for Peter, not like he had for Sirius

the patronas charm 2nd harry casted is very emotional for me even till this day, the fact that he originally thought it was his father then realize if he doesn't do it both of them are gonna die but he already lived thru the moment and they survived gave him tons of confidence to cast a super powerful charm...it's a very very good moment i will never forget

It IS the best movie in the series.

Seriously you think adaption wise it was the best?! Really? Did you read the book it's adapting?

reply

Uh no, it's the worst one in my opinion. Here are my rankings:

1) Deathly Hallows Part 2
2) Goblet of Fire
3) Deathly Hallows Part 1
4) Half Blood Prince
5) Order of the Phoenix
6) Chamber of Secrets
7) Sorcerer's Stone
8) Prisoner of Azkaban

It was too campy and tried way to hard to be funny. Plus that final shot of Harry on his broomstick is just odd and completely out of place. I remember really loving the book and being completely letdown by the movie.

In all honesty this is the only film in the series that I have a problem with, all of the others are great.

But you ranked Goblet of Fire as number 2. Really? The movie that had that *beep* stupid and embarassing Durmstrang entrance? The one that build up to the Quidditch cup just not to show it? The one that completely missed Dumbledore's character? The one with the Crouch tongue flick for no reason. That one?

Goblet of Fire was amazing, especially the last 30 minutes or so. The resurrection scene with Voldemort is probably my favorite scene out of the entire film series.

Prisoner of Azkaban had a ton of problems that made it the weakest in the series, totally campy and silly, the acting was horrendous, the humor didn't work, the drama didn't work and the movie completely butchered the book.

The thing is... it IS the best movie of the whole series, which makes it an outlier in the franchise. The same can be said about the first two, which I think are better than 4-7, but so different in tone that they almost negate the franchise as a whole, and by extension themselves. A lot can be said for a singular directorial vision over a franchise. "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" stands as the most interesting film in the franchise, and the most accomplished as a singular piece of art. While the franchise as a whole after Azkaban is quality by standard... it does not live up to the promise of either three on it's own, or when taken in accord with the first two. I think the process became too streamlined after "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", and the spark of invention and exploration from scene is sorely lost as the producers begin to build the entries as if they're constructing LEGO sets.

I was disappointed when they continued to use David Yates, just because he's a safe bet and knows the game... the game being laboriously going through the motions of bringing the images on the page to life, instead of coming to each new phase with a fresh eye about how things could be done uniquely for the screen, breathing much needed life and humanity into an imperfect film franchise.

Best direction, finest cinematography, best cast ensemble, best student performances (no child's play + no teen angst drama yet either), great pacing, & certainly the most Harry centric of the entire series- because Voldemort is nowhere to this film, it lets everyone breathe for a moment, important for character & saga development.
My #35 film all time.
