Why is this considered THAT good?

It's not a hate message, I just don't get why is it a 9.2 show. I love sci-fi and I had all the good intentions to watch it but after 3 episodes I stopped it. So, I honestly don't get why the rating is so high. I mean no disrespect towards the fans, the creators and all the crew, I just want an answer why do you guys think it's so good that it deserves a 9.2 rating.

Also sorry for my english.

reply

In agreement that its a solid show that deserved a second season but its no masterpiece by any stretch. I liked it but I didnt love it. The 9 rating suprises me.

reply

After watching the whole show, while it was entertaining for what it was, I just don't get what the fuss was all about.

reply

It's not THAT good. It's similar Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead and Sherlock in that it's good but overrated and overhyped. All of these show also seem to have a large fanboy/fangirl following which might have something to do with the blind 10/10 votes on this site in particular. For the record, I watch or have watched all of the shows I've mentioned.

reply

But they are that good. I remember the first time I watched the Walking Dead, and Breaking Bad on netflix (sherlock 1 & 2 were pretty good, even if 3 got sort of ridiculous). They were so far above anything else that I had watched on tv, even my favorite shows. That's what I thought when I watched Firefly for the first time. This show is so good. And you don't have to be a fangirl to appreciate that it is great storytelling.

Francis, it's a nation of f**ing rats.

reply

I agree.

The words overrated and overhyped get thrown around so much, most people don't really know what they mean. They don't mean that you personally don't like them.

Can't stop the signal.

reply

Fanboys will kill me for this, but I only gave Firefly a 5/10 because the couple episodes (plus Serenity) I watched bored me to death. I'm not a Joss Whedon fan, though I like Angel. I'm neither a sci-fi fan, though The Empire Strikes Back is my all-time favourite movie. I've never also understood the love for Nathan Fillion even though as a Canadian I always wish well to my compatriots. I tried, but I don't get it.

reply

I agree on Nathan Fillion. He's really a one-note actor, and now that he's getting up there in years he can't always hit that note. Also I can't always understand what he says. But whatever; he didn't detract anything from the show and he's good at throwing punches.

reply

Ooh? You're a Fantasy Fan! So who cares...;-D

reply

but after 3 episodes I stopped it

I just want an answer

Why on Earth do you think you deserve an answer or that it's our job to provide you with one? Neither of those are true. More importantly, why do you care? The show didn't work for you. Not your concern about why others like it.

Because we watched the whole series and the movie...many times. It's GREAT!

Couple of points I wanna emphasize

1. Among the many sci-fi in the world that are SO UNREALISTIC (I know it's sci fi so people are willing to overlook that but still being realistic makes it seem like a world we can indulge in ourselves). Like the no sound in space was pretty accurate and not being able to fire a gun in space without a bit of oxygen.

2. The show is not in chronological order. Refer to the trivia part of this IMDB page to get the episodes in order.

3. If you only watched the first 3 episodes, you still don't know the main plot point that Joss probably wanted to incorporate. Pretty much all you know about these characters are that they are essentially mercenaries/smugglers and each episode shows us their adventures. What they didn't show is that the Tam siblings are a big part of the story and that Rivers is possibly a lethal & genius assassin after being experimented on in a lab. She also is a "reader" and can read minds. However she lacks amygdala which explains why she's so.. off

4. One of the biggest excitements about space is the idea of travel and venturing into new places of adventure where no one has gone before. Firefly helps indulge in such adventurous pangs people have.

5. Characters are pretty well written and if this show had aired as it was intended (to having around 7 seasons) it would have developed the characters much better.

I guess one way of looking at it is that it's NOT a 9.2 star show. For some people it is and for others it isn't.

I personally gave 10 stars to 5 episodes (the double length pilot, which I'm counting as 2 episodes, plus 3 others), and 7 stars to 3 episodes. I think I'm a fairly hard marker. I've probably rated a couple hundred films on this site -- mostly just the ones I like -- and I've given out about 6 TEN-Star Ratings and maybe another 50 NINE-Star Ratings. Almost all of the other hundreds (2 thousand?) of films I've seen, I would give 7 stars or lower.

Overall I have to give Firefly 10/10 because I've watched it 30+ times -- and also because what other show EVER would I give 10 stars to one THIRD of the episodes?

Keep in mind that people love this show after watching ALL of it. You can't expect a show to be at its best for every scene or every episode. You could be the smartest person in the world, but if all someone knows about you is 5 dumb things you've done and one smart thing, they would naturally think, "Okay, this guy is not as smart as people say." But that person would have an extremely inaccurate perception of your intelligence. Fair?

Don't ask yourself why other people think it's brilliant. Just keep asking yourself if you like it enough to watch one more episode. If you stop after a couple of episodes then the show is probably not for you. If you watch 6 or 8 episodes, only then can you really do an accurate assessment of the show.
