It's not a hate message, I just don't get why is it a 9.2 show. I love sci-fi and I had all the good intentions to watch it but after 3 episodes I stopped it. So, I honestly don't get why the rating is so high. I mean no disrespect towards the fans, the creators and all the crew, I just want an answer why do you guys think it's so good that it deserves a 9.2 rating.
Have to agree with the poster, love sci-fi but cannot get the rating. It's watchable, certainly better than average( I believe) but not 9.2. Does this involve being in love with Fillion, Torres or another to vote so high??
Anyone who still has faith in humanity has never been to the imdb boards.
If i had to give a reason why the rating is so high, it'd probably because so many people want it continued. Its been a few years... (over ten) sure, but they started the show leaving it SO open for new episodes. The show does slack in a couple episodes with the side cast, etc.. but the main cast is amazing, i mean amazing. I would love if they'd pick it back up, even now.
The show was ok and deserved more seasons, but I only rated it a 7. I think Whedon is overrated as a writer/creator and the people that do like his earlier work are very vocal. There doesn't have to be a lot of fans if they are all vocal. Most highly rated shows have a "silent majority" of people who watched it, this show has few silent fans.
I thought it was perfectly cast, but the mixing of old Westerns and modern spaceships made it too un-science fiction for me. Stories were re-hashes of a lot of Westerns, but with a space twist to it and that isn't a compliment to me.
The premise that there is a solar system with so many planets and moons in the "Goldilocks" zone is statistically impossible. Also, with technology to Terraform planets, but not to fix the problems with Earth? Unlikely.
if someone hasn't seen it you can't really explain why, they have to try for themselves, so in that case 'IS' is good enough an answer. As for the others that want to discuss if it deserves a 9, it depends on what you like. My answer is that I love SF and this one holds together better then any other SF. It's simply the dialogues (for me)
Lost - like heroes - only lasted one season - they just kept repeating them. The morons at the studio didnt know any better - kept paying whatever bills were sent them.
John: ...yeah, yeah, yeah. Russell: ...no, no, no John: Ill drive Russel Ramis: OK.
Its mainly because its like Star Wars. Its like real world problems in a sci fi world. Not many Sci fi's do this. Its all about the characters and how they gel together as a 'family.' The back stories the progression, the humour.
There are several reasons why this show was outstanding to me. One is the characters but I won't beat that one to death anymore since everyone covered that. The thing that made me love it was the situations and the choices made along the way. Like when they steal the alliance medical supplies, but when Mal finds out it was for a group of very sick people he forfeits the reward for the job and even makes a big enemy because of it. Or when that enemy catches up with him and tortures Mal and Wash how Mals unbreakable spirit keeps Wash from dying. Out of gas showed that even when he was down and out there was still no way of taking the fight out of him and his will to survive pushed him to fix the ship even after being shot. Even though I knew more episodes came after it I kept thinking he wouldn't make it. That is incredible story telling.
I've watched the entire show and i have to agree. The rating is ridiculous and i have no idea as to why. In all honesty it was extremely disappointing. I give the show a very generous 5*. Sorry guys.
I'm 5 episodes in and am not sure if I can last much longer. Besides the obvious benefit of Morena Baccarin playing a hooker I'm struggling to find much else to like. I’m still waiting to see the creative stories, because so far it looks like they borrowed an awful lot from 60’s Westerns. I enjoy well done sci-fi, but so far this isn’t much more than a mediocre Western with inter-planetary travel.
Well, as someone else pointed out, opinions are subjective. I like roses, you like lilies. I love yellow, you like blue. I love Firefly but could not stand Lost. All subjective. I think Firefly is considered THAT good because it was so different. FateTheM is right in some ways. It is a Western set in the future but the characters are truly unique - at least in my subjective opinion. The only one I really dislike is River and wish Joss had come up with some other reason the Alliance was chasing them besides her. I find that I tend to fast forward through her scenes. But I love the rest of the characters and feel I would have loved them even more if the show had lasted a little longer and they could have been fleshed out more. I'm planning on watching the movie this weekend and hope that a lot of the answers are there.
I think some people have a problem with the show because it isn't sci-fi enough. No transporting people through space; no phasers; no aliens. To me, it looks like what I could envision the future really being. Who says that beings on other planets need to look like something out of Star Wars? Why can't they look like us?
Ah, well, liking or disliking a show is subjective, but, for me, I love Firefly and am so glad I found it.
But, there were no aliens in Firefly. :P Every single one of them had ancestors back on Earth - they were either colonists or descendants of colonists. Not "beings on other planets" understood as "not humans". ;)
I can't speak for others, but I thought it was "that good" only after seeing the movie "Serenity". The movie revealed where the series would (or maybe could) have gone. There were a couple of stand out episodes in the series, but I would agree that some episodes were weak and certainly not worth a 9.2 rating. That being said, I think it's rare for a series to hit the ground running, and I think "Firefly" not only had a lot of potential, but I think would have reached that potential in time. Joss Whedon has proved his abilities over and over again, and all of the characters were interesting, complex and likeable, even Jayne.
