What people don't understand is that you should rate movies based on their entertainment value WITHIN IT'S CATEGORY.
Sure, a movie like xXx isn't a deep story with a tale of freedom like the Shawshank Redemption. Triple x movies don't even have a plausible plot to go with.
Guess why? Because they're *action movies*. You don't watch action movies for a deep plot. You watch an action movie because of the ACTION. Just like you watch a comedy movie for the LAUGHS.
IMDb ratings lose credibility when nerds rate anything that doesn't conform to their philosophical standards of a "deep storyline" to 5 stars out of 10. If a movie isn't tagged with Drama/Thriller/Murder Mystery, it's not supposed to have a *beep* plot!
Why don't I just go and rate every Conan O'Brien episode a 1/10 due to a lack of storyline? Or maybe it deserves a higher score because it does what it's meant to do: Make people laugh?
I couldn't agree more. People need to stop over analyzing movies that DONT NEED TO BE ANALYZED in the first place. That's what get's them such bad ratings. I am a movie buff. I really am and I love a wide range of movies-I even own this one just because I thought it was pure entertainment. If I wanted a deep story line that made me think I would watch On the Waterfront or like you said Shawshank Redemption. People need to see Action movies for what they are.
Because there are too many snobby people who think they're 'movie buffs'. Never mind. I gave it 9/10, mainly for the best action movie opening sequence ever!!!
I love it when people cite 'bad acting' on part of an actor, actress or model... citizen?
I would think part of the awkardness of xXx in this flick is due to the fact that he's a fish - kinda - out of water. Sure, he's a criminal, but he's not a killer... it is a simple message, really. Dont be a dick, Dick! ... I'm not sure why that is lost on so many.
No movie is for everyone, because then nobody would like it and then it would suck.
However I would put this on par with Iron Man One ... better than Iron Man Two, maybe not as good as ...Predator, though the stunts are over the top crazy, there is a reason why they have not topped this flick - in terms of stunts (though maybe with The Island ... or Transformers 3 .. ?) is because people can die (and have) when filming this kind of stuff. xXx was a great flick - for what it was - a semi mindless action Diesel flick, with eye candy for all.
Kinda like 13th Warrior, in Valhalla, where the brave may live forever.......!!!!!!!!!!
So everyone dies, the question is - What do you with the time you have?

Maybe that's what they're already doing and they just didn't enjoy the movie? Or is it your contention that every film of every category be rated highly, simply because it's in said category? Also, if 6 or lower is an invalid rating for this film, could you specify what range is acceptable? We need to spread the good word around IMDb, RT, and Metacritic to let everyone know they're doing it all wrong.

Action movies can't have a deep story? You better tell that to the writers of Aliens, Die Hard, Heat, Lethal Weapon, The Matrix, Predator, and Robocop. Also, I'm glad you're here to tell me why I watch movies, else I'd forget.

I'll be sure to call your toll free number from now on whenever I want to rate a movie, just to make sure I have your approval first. I definitely wouldn't want to make the mistake of applying my own level of entertainment and standards in my own ratings, that would be unfair... to, uh, you I guess.

I agree with you on every account, except that I don't think the stories of the films you mentioned are deep. Smart, probably, entertaining, damn right!, but I don't really think their stories are deep (except The Matrix).
