Stupid ratings

What people don't understand is that you should rate movies based on their entertainment value WITHIN IT'S CATEGORY.

Sure, a movie like xXx isn't a deep story with a tale of freedom like the Shawshank Redemption. Triple x movies don't even have a plausible plot to go with.

Guess why? Because they're *action movies*. You don't watch action movies for a deep plot. You watch an action movie because of the ACTION. Just like you watch a comedy movie for the LAUGHS.

IMDb ratings lose credibility when nerds rate anything that doesn't conform to their philosophical standards of a "deep storyline" to 5 stars out of 10. If a movie isn't tagged with Drama/Thriller/Murder Mystery, it's not supposed to have a *beep* plot!

Why don't I just go and rate every Conan O'Brien episode a 1/10 due to a lack of storyline? Or maybe it deserves a higher score because it does what it's meant to do: Make people laugh?

I didn't say this movie was even good. In fact, like you said, in some parts the action was so ridiculous it practically insulted the audience.

What I hate is the idiots who vote nearly every action flick 1/10 just because it "lacks a storyline".

Action movies don't need a storyline!! What, you gonna stop watching boxing because there is no dialogue and only pure violence? People watch boxing for the f...ing violence! Millions of people do.. And those who don't like it don't whine, because they don't watch it in the first place.

I love this movie and I LIVE For this sh$t,,,,,Best quote words ever :)

reply

Agree, "I live for this Sh!t" one of the coolest lines in a movie ever.

One thing that irritates me about imdb boards it's the "looks like" topics. Never even close.

I gave this film a 2/10 based on entertainment value. Your analogy about box is dumb as all hell. Box is a sport. Sports don't have a storyline because they are not trying to tell a story, films are. Action films NEED a storyline, because they are supposed to be a story that's told by filmmakers. It doesn't have to be a deep smart storyline, but at least it has to be entertaining. A story like the one in xXx is dumb and NOT entertaining. xXx doesn't have only a terrible story, but also terrible acting and terrible action sequences, so I gave it a 2.

reply

Agreed, movies should be rated on how they entertain us, it's their job to do that. Weather it be action, drama or comedy, *beep* plot or good plot, if it entertains you, you give it a good mark.

this is a good action thriller with some GREAT stunts

reply

Maybe, and I'm going out on a limb, some people aren't entertained by pure action. Possibly, and I may be totally wrong, a good story is entertaining to some people. Those people, therefore, may have found this movie lacking in the story department, thus giving it a 3,4, or 5 out of 10.

reply

Well those people shouldn't be watching action movies then should they.

If the entertainment wasn't me laughing at it, maybe I would have given it a higher score.

"Agreed, movies should be rated on how they entertain us, it's their job to do that. Weather it be action, drama or comedy, *beep* plot or good plot, if it entertains you, you give it a good mark. "

This is exactly how I rate movies! If it entertains me, I rate it highly, regardless of genre / lack of depth or drama / whatever. I don't sit and judge movies based on their "artistic value" or cinematography or anything, while I can appreciate these things, they're not the main reason I watch movies. The primary reason I watch movies is to be entertained!

I love movies like Shawshank Redemption, The Godfather, Goodfellas, Rain Man etc. and I also love movies like xXx, The Fast and the Furious, Galaxy Quest, Spaceballs etc. If it entertains me it's all good! xXx: State of the Union failed to entertain me though, so I rated it poorly.

I pretty much love any movie genre, it just depends on my mood and what I feel like watching that day. But like I said, I don't over-analyze movies that don't need to be over-analyzed, I rate based on if I enjoyed my time watching it, if that means getting sucked into a serious and deep storyline with Oscar winning acting or laughing it up to great comedy, or even snacking on popcorn to crazy action movies, as long as I come away entertained it's all good.

I understand your point but I didn't like this movie at all. Not for the lack of a stroyline, didn't expect that. But I felt like I was watching "tough American guy wants to be the USA-Bond, but without the sophistication". And the acting is not very good, and I do expect good acting in any movie. Just my point of view of course.

Your wasting your time because of several reasons.

The world is full of stupid people.

10 year old kids on mommies computer come on hear to play grown up.

Super conservative people who are apposed to all moves that have action/guns/violence/sex will come hear and give it a bad rating without even seen the movie.

Some people have no lives other than being internet forum trolls and will give it a rating without having seen the movie.

so and and so forth.

I gave up years a go on Amazon.com rating, they should make it so that only people who have bought the movie from Amazon can rate it, that way people who like boring movies with no plot or story like "on golden pond" which is basically about normal average people having conversations, won't come hear and give an exciting action movie a bad rating because there brains can't comtemplate exciting action movies.

normally I'd agree with you OP, but the mediocre to bad acting from Diesel (which is strange since he did fine in all other movies I've seen in him) and his horrible, ridiculous lines kinda ruined the movie for me.

Either way this movie fails because...the plot sucks!

Yes,it does have a plot(though its not the only thing that fails) and it stinks.

You dont need to be a "deep storyline" lover to realize this.

i hate the top 1000 voters. who are they anyway? if I vote randomly to all the movies on IMDB, do I qualify for the top 1000?

Yeah, IMDB rating is stupid in this perspective.

XXX is fun adrenolin rush. I gave it 7/10.

I really enjoy films with thought-provoking stories and award-winning acting.

But sometimes, I need a no-brainer action film. xXx fits the bill perfectly.

9/10

I gave it 1/10 based on it's entertainment "value". Are you happy now? Wait let me make it more clear to you: THIS IS PURE GARBAGE.

reply

The movie rocked. It's entertainment value; 8/10

reply

6/10...Lots of fun, though even as an action movie it had its flaws. Making him into extreme sports helped the believability, though (as per my review).

reply

I do think there are haters that rate movies like trolls...without even seeing them.

But I have seen this...and would give it probably a 5/10.....and I'm not saying it's bad......5/10 means it's done it's job in entertaining me. If the acting wasn't so laughable it would get a 6 or maybe even higher, who knows. The film has some great action scenes...but also feels somewhat raw to me...jmho.

Anyway....I love action films...but to rate a film a 7 or higher in my book it has to have solid acting/story....and action if an action movie.

Take the movie TRUE LIES. There is a film, and action movie, that has superb acting, great story, great action and sequences, as well as great comedic moments....now that to me is a real full out action movie.

These days there is to much *beep* leaving out the acting/story.....which doesn't have to happen.....you can have solid action movie with story....

Then again...this is a Rob Cohen film who thinks our generation is pure ADHD and only makes films like this....super quick editing...lack of any integral story. I'm not trying to hate on this movie, as I enjoyed it. I'm just being very objective with what I've seen in the action film genre. Has our generation started only praising these hyperactive films like a Shoot Em Up type film(which are fun to watch ONCE IN AWHILE), but all the time....ahhhh.

Anyways, I do enjoy this film on the level it should be, and it gets a 5/10 for that. People on IMDB are way to generous in my mind nowadays. 5/10 is decent from me....people need to realize there are many films that they can give a 1-5 score, but they don't. To many people have rating systems of 5-10.
