Silence is such a Masterpiece. 10/10 film. Love everything about it.
Red Dragon is decent entertainment. An inferior but still great performance from Hopkins is still the best aspect of this film. A 5 or 6 / 10 for me.
Manhunter. I had to turn it off. Couldn't watch it for more than an hour. Maybe overall it's not terrible, and I could see it being decent in its time, but Hopkins portrayal of Lecter is so many universes beyond Cox's IMO, that I just couldn't finish it. It just made me want to put the other movie back on.
Red dragon is far superior to Man Hunter. I blame the director for Man Hunter. The suspense is lacking and the scary and cruel parts were weakly conceived. Red Dragon got it right.
I thought Red Dragon should have been more gory. I was really disappointed that they didn't show Lounds getting his lips bit off or after he got all burned up. But I agree that is was a decent movie, better than Manhunter but not as good as SOTL. Hopkins is really the only redeeming aspect of Red Dragon and also Emily Watson. Everyone else's performance just felt forced or flat somehow? Fiennes did a pretty decent job as well, I just felt like something was missing.
Manhunter isn't about Hannibal Lecktor. He's merely a device to move the plot forward. It wasn't until The Silence of the Lambs was made that he became iconic.
Petersen and Cox were better in their roles in Manhunter. Fiennes was a better Dolarhyde. Hoffman also does a better Lounds.
I really like Cox's take on Lecter. It felt more real to me.
I think what really kinda sinks Manhunter is Micheal Mann trying to stylize the film too much. Most of his films suffer from his forced visual styling, if nothing else it very much dates his works. I guess he thinks he's like Kubrick but just doesn't have Kubrick's sensibilities.
If you’re watching Manhunter just for Lector then you’re wasting your time, he’s in the film for 10 minutes and isn’t given the aura that Hopkins’ version enjoys, he comes across as the kind of psychopath who can hide in plain sight and you wouldn’t look twice at, Hopkins’ Lector seems almost like a supernatural entity.
Manhunter is a much better film though imo, the mistake people make before watching it is thinking it’s a Hannibal film, its not.
What it is, is a fantastic thriller that is beautifully shot and has great performances from Petersen, Farina and Tom Noonan, whose Tooth Fairy is far more terrifying and memorable than Fiennes’ is.

Agreed on both counts. Having read the book after seeing the movie, I was left with the feeling that "Manhunter" was like "Jaws," i.e., a streamlined adaptation that works better on screen than a direct adaptation.
"Red Dragon" is more faithful to the source material, but feels bloated as a result. Fiennes was awesome as a tortured, conflicted Dolarhyde, but Noonan was just freaking scary, and that's all we really needed on screen.
the whole "thinking it's a Hannbal film" though, cracks me up ... they showed "Manhunter" on TV after "Silence" became a mega-hit, and the promo showed Brian Cox but in Anthony Hopkins's cell, BLATANTLY pitching it as a Hannibal film to the point of rehiring Cox to act like Hopkins in the promo
Manhunter is a Michael Mann film and it is a gem. Much better than Red Dragon. And Brian Cox’s version of Hannibal is more menacing and manipulative. He’s truly a cold killer. We don’t see his relationship with Clarice in this one so he’s less amusing and likable. But how he gets info while locked up with that telephone is brilliant. I happened to see this movie first (that is before Silence), and it was the first time I saw Cox. I could make no comparisons. I just remember he (Cox) was scary and so was the actor who played Dolaryde. Joan Allen is also brilliant.
Manhunter, the movie, is better than the book, Red Dragon. When you read about Will Graham in Silence, it says that his face resembles Picasso, which tells you how it really goes. So where as Clarice is successful, Graham, a brilliant FBI guy, was a victim.
When something like Hannibal played by Hopkins gets that popular, people want to see it over and over. And it just doesn’t work. It’s a money grab after a certain point.
