the ending sucks

i don't like the ending - she was so mean to them all, especially to him, because she loved herself more than she loved him: instead of drinking from the spring and living forever with her true love (i suppose he was her true love), even if she would have suffered because of the others passing away, she preferred to live her life (so maybe he wasn't her true love) without suffering the eternity, but leaving him heartbroken, to live forever with an unhealing pain in his heart (because he did love her - even after almost 100 years he came back).
what do you think?

[SPOILER ALERT]This thread is about the ending, so it will contain spoilers! I think the ending is just fine. Why the heck did that boy waited that long for? Why wait that long to come back and see what happened? If he had return much earlier (5-10years?), maybe he could have convinced her to do as they did...

But it seems to be the more logical ending unless they want one of those happily ever after (literally!)...[SPOILER ENDS]

but it would have been neat if they had filmed an alternate ending and stuck it in a 'deleted scenes' section...

I would have done the same thing.

If you got inmortality you will say at first wow! it's amazing then ... I'm pretty sure that after 100 or 150 you will get bored and lonely.

Also you will be in pain all your life because if you family you'll see them die unless you convince them to drink as well (but that will be selfish because they have the right to make a life on their own).

I actually liked the ending. i don't really care about the whole message of the book thing, becuase i would have drunk the water, but the ends what makes the story good. it would have been boring if she would have drunk it and was with jesse forever and that was it. the fact that she did grow up and die and left jesse all alone and heartbroken forever even though they were in love is what i liked about the ending.

The ending SUCKED. Another poster was right about all who keep saying those who think the ending sucked didn't understand the theme. I understand it just fine, and I disagree. So most of the Tucks just exist. Their loss. Someone famous once said "Millions long for immortality who don't know what to do with themselves on a rainy Sunday afternoon." Too true. If you're a dullard, then immortality is not for you. On the other hand, there are those of us that could easily pass eternity and wonder how it is going by so fast. It's kinda all in what you do with it. For another viewpoint on this theme, check "Groundhog Day" with Bill Murray. Message: You can live your life to the fullest AND live forever. In fact, Murray's character didn't "come to life" until he thought he WAS going to be immortal.

Someone else said - to a young poster - that s/he'd understand the theme when s/he got older (meaning why living long wasn't a good thing). Someone else said who would want to be 15 forever? Well, speaking as someone well into middle age, I can say that I for one would LOVE to be 15 forever. Middle age sucks, and it's gonna get worse from here. There is so much to see, so much to learn, so much to experience. The body, though, declines. Would I drink the water? In a heartbeat, with no regrets.

You, Sir/Madam, are insane. Do you also torture small animals for fun? Have guys/girls fall in love with you just so you can break their hearts and get your jollies? If the 13 is your age, you can look forward to a long life of bitterness and lonliness with that attitude.

i agree. It's been a while since i saw this but i remember hating the ending b/c they ultimately didn't end up together.

i'd rather be his whore than your wife

i love the ending, though i'm sad they didn't end up together, it was the right thing for her to do. you only need to live once, not forever, like they said in the movie.

It was incredibly sad, I cried a lotttt. But I guess it would've been sad either way because she would be giving up a lot. Altough, I do wish they would've ended up together.

if he really loved her...why did it take almost a century for him to return to her? that part doesn't make sense.

I originally agreed with the posters who said it was because for the Tucks, "time didn't exist for them," so 8 decades would feel the same as 8 years or 8 months, but then I realized... hey, he's riding a motorcycle and wearing modern clothes at the end. He would've known that many years had passed, if he only saw a stray newspaper's date on the ground or something when he and his brother went on trips around the world every 10 years. He could've come back to check on her after the first decade. She still would've been only 25 at that point, and at least she could've been able to tell him she decided not to drink from the spring so he'd be able to move on. Maybe he would find another love who DID want to drink from the spring. After all, he has eternity to find her.

But I agree with the posters who said the ending was beautifully sad, and had to be that way to carry the message of "live your life to the end."

Yeah I agree the ending sucked. For those of you who think her life will be empty if she drank, how do you know?

I don't think we can even imagine a everlasting happy life with the person you love. With the world filled with sadness and disappointment.

As to her family, eventually she will leave her parents, everybody does. You grow up and get married. You become independent and move out, doesn't mean you dont' love them. You still visits them every now and then. There's no reason why she can't visit them if she drank the water. Just like children moved overseas, still visits their parents (she can put on some make up wrinkles, learn from movie makeup artist)

She doesn't love him enough, obviously. If you love them you will want to be with them, against all odds. To live and die for them.

She doesn't deserve him. In real life, she would of regretted it, everytime she argues with her husband, everytime she gets a major illness.
