Completely Underrated

I don't understand why this movie has such low ratings on IMDB, RottenTomatoes, and Metacritic. I think this is one of the best parody movies ever.

Don't get me wrong I can't stand any Friedberg/Seltzer flick, those movies deserve horrible ratings.

I think this movie has developed somewhat of a cult following.

I love this movie and completely agree it is underrated. I mean what can you not like about this movie, everything is f\cking hilarious and does an excellent job making fun of the movies we love.

There’s no one on IMDB I care enough for to use spell check- suck it grammar Nazis

reply

It's not any better than the Friedberg/Seltzer movies thats way.

reply

Acutally it is. F&S' formula is to take a scene from a movie and a) turn some detail in it to the extreme; b) insert some character from real life. That's what they consider funny. Yes, ocasionally that approach works, but most of the time it doesn't. And it definitly doesn't work if the movie consists of nothing else.
NATM however has a bunch of scenes that are funny by themselves, not because some extreme detail or because they parody some other movie. For example: the scene where Beverly Polcyn enters and the two "dudes" don't notice that she is the undercover reporter posing as a teen is *funny* because of the situation, not because it takes a stab at "Never Been Kissed". There are scenes that *only* play for the recognition effect (example: Les's introduction. Those who haven't seen "American Beauty" won't find it funny. Those who have might, but might also not. I didn't.) but these are limited.

Yeah - this movie is genuinely funny - i mean there is also *beep* Wayons Bros. moments but still, REWATCHABLE AS *beep* too

I agree. The only other spoof movie I love more than this would have to be "Don't Be A Menace To South Central While Drinking Your Juice In The Hood"

reply

How can we not? It has sick, repulsive, vulgar and even violent crud for cripe's sake.

reply

Agree with ya tribefan.... this isn't a great movie by any means, but there are several flashes of brilliance throughout. Definitely underrated and definitely better than 5.6/10.

reply

I agree with you, tribefan.

There are a lot of brilliant jokes and lines that really go under the radar.

reply

Yeah, it's hilarious. I have watched it many times.

This is definitely an underrated gem. While the script is a well-crafted parodic composite of its sources, it's really the quality of the actors that that elevates this film above its niche genre peers. Chris Evans, Chyler Leigh, Mia Kirshner...these are some of the best of their generation. Even Jamie Pressly, who doesn't exactly have Meryl Streep's range, is unsurpassed in her chosen specialty, mercurial American blonde minx. Oh well...at least in the age of multiple media platforms, movies can more than ever find a second life after the box office.

It is absolutely an underrated gem. It's ridiculous but at the same time extremely endearing, which makes you want to go back and watch it again!

I think John Hughes fans hate this movie with a passion and rate it down. This hilarious movie takes dead aim at JH and that's gotta leave a mark on the JH Fan Club.

reply

I'm a John Hughes fan & I think this movie is *beep* hilarious! Some of the Hughes spoof moments are played so well. Getting Paul Gleason (RIP) back as Vernon was great, & the 16 Candles/Pretty In Pink set-ups (especially Randy Quaid) are ace!

All the actors do a great job in this, & as mentioned elsewhere in this thread, it doesn't simply rely on spoofing to get laughs.

I believe I heard/saw/watched somewhere once, that the writers &/or director, are actually John Hughes fans.

A very under-rated film indeed! (Gonna have to watch this again now!)

reply

Why? I don't think the movie takes aim, it pays homage! :) I enjoyed the references. They named the school in the movie 'John Hughes High School'. Doesn't that just say respect?
I honestly think it was meant as a goodhearted spoof and nothing more.

reply

I've found Hughes fans to be the sensitive type, I grew up in the 80s and got dragged to see The Breakfast Club by a good buddy of mine. Afterward I described it as "OK" and he pretty much went ballistic and gave me all the reasons it was one of the greatest movies of all time. You call it homage and that's fair, I would call it parody. Either way I think a lot of Hughes die hards could easily take offense. Admittedly I'm just speculating, I think the movie is great and it's hilarious, and trying to get inside the minds of any person with a sense of humor not liking it. Not saying I've got it right by any means.

Please don't confuse "John Hughes fan" with "paranoid schizophrenia" - I know they're easy to mix up.

reply

I agree. So many parodies of the past fifteen years or so have been wretched, but this is definitely not one of them.
