I liked this movie better when it was called "Rounders"

Young phenom in a game of chance played on a table with green felt.

Suffers a large loss, on or off the tables.

Gives up playing, much to the liking of his law-school student girlfriend.

Becomes a construction worker.

Realizes true calling.

Confrontation scene with law-school girlfriend about re-lapse into playing.

Confrontation scene includes discovery of "gangsta's roll" of cash.

Player defends himself, saying his is a game of skill, not luck, and it is his calling to play it.

...

I could go on, but come on, this Poolhall Junkies movie is just doing a really, really bad Rounders impression, if you ask me.

Well to that extent you could say that you liked Rounders better when it was called Poolhall Junkies, because Mars Callahan wrote Poolhall Junkies years ago and was shipping it around to try and get it made. Perhaps the makers of Rounders heard about his movie idea and decided to cash in on it and change it from pool to poker.
