Velma was gay in original script

Co-screenwriter James Gunn said Velma was openly gay in his original screenplay but the studio kept watering it down and finally dropped it during rewrites.

is that good or bad? I lose track

reply

Good. She wasn’t portrayed as gay in the original cartoons so pointless to have it in the movies.

reply

Exactly right

WHO WAS PORTRAYED AS GAY IN ANY CARTOON BEFORE THE LAST FEW YEARS?

reply

I just want to see Daphne & Velma get it on...what's wrong with that? It's totally disease free.

reply

Agreed! They experimented in college.

reply

Probably because in those times, the studio was smart enough to know it would ruin the movie if they added that BS.

Just a thought on the look of Velma since her creation in general. With her muscular legs and her spectacles, she reminds me of Billie Jean Moffatt/King. Billie Jean started winning her big tennis tournaments a couple of years before the original TV series. This makes me wonder if Velma's look was based, consciously or unconsciously, on Billie Jean.
