I love this movie! Can anyone reccomend anything similar?
I love this movie! I just seen the deleted scenes which are well worth viewing, the scenes were he gets caught shoplifting are funny. Can anyone recommend anything similar?

I don't know why but this movie always seems to remind me of What's eating Gilbert Grape. A slow moving, but excellent movie.

Check out "Sideways," by the same director. The characters are much younger, but it's still got a very similar feel. Also, "Broken Flowers" by Jim Jarmusch might be something to look at.

I see this movie as the comedic brother of another underrated Nicholson performance - The Pledge.
Both The Pledge and About Schmidt feature Nicholson as retirees with no purpose or direction in their lives, although The Pledge has much darker themes.
TOTALLY AGREE WITH 'SIDEWAYS' AND 'BROKEN FLOWERS'.
Just finished watching "About Schmidt" for the first time.
I have 2 movie suggestions, since they are both about widowers who take road trips with regard to their children - both very good in their own right.
"Harry & Tonto," a comedy-drama which is years old, with the excellent Art Carney (Norton from "The Honeymooners")
and
"Everybody's Fine," which was promoted as a comedy, but was really a serious movie. The main point of the movie - being honest with your loved ones while they're still around - isn't lost on me, since I've lost both my parents in the last few years.
I highly recommend both, even if you may not appreciate the dramatic parts along with the comic. Hope you'll like them as much as I did.
