Yes, I did.
sharecame damn close when I saw the picture that Ndugu drew of them together. I cant really explain why it impacted my emotions so much, but for some reason it did. I have yet to cry at a movie, but this one came really close, ranks near Forrest Gump as movies that almost made me cry.

You got it right buddy, the point of the end scene is to give us mortals out here hope tht even when we feel life isnt going well we are usually doing better than we are feeling. Feelings aren't facts... theyr'e ethereal moments that flitter away with the changing wind like a shadow borne from dust.
In the end scene Schmidt was feeling like his life was one string of hopeless messes but the letter from Ndugu showed him the error in his thinking. Maybe if we all took a look around and focused on helping the next guy, the guy less fortunate than ourselves we wont have so many wackos and unhappy people spreading the disease of sadness and hopelesness around.

"no day but today"
I had NEVER cried during a movie but that ending was just so sad... I cried my eyes out...
Jack Nicholson is without doubt the greatest actor I have seen in my lifetime.
My eyes watered. I felt so bad for him! I didn't even watch the whole movie! But I take it as even though he failed in stopping his daughter and that all seemed hopeless, there was a little glimmer of hope for him in the fact that some small child that has nothing finds joy in his letters he sends and that he was wrong that nobody needed him.
EVERYBODY DO THE COOL DANCE!
Yes....me too....it touched me so.
I agree....for Jack to play this part of an older retired guy....who is made to look for most of the time kinda like a doofus. Repressed feelings, awkward....groping for some kind of meaning in retirement. Then he makes the connection with this little boy far away, and the little boy responds. It was so human and touching. Jack should've gotten the Oscar. Great performance. I have to watch this movie again. Payne is a genius.

I'm assuming there's enough spoilers in this old thread that I don't need to say SPOILERS here.
Anyway, I'll begin by saying that it never fails to amaze me on the IMDB message boards how so many people can see the same scene so differently.
I think it's great because, just like any other form of art, good movies are left to personal interpretation.
For me, the final scene was hopeful and uplifting.
Warren was convinced that he was a total failure and that his life hadn't meant anything to anyone.
Then, he read this beautiful letter about Ndugu's life (whom, at that point to Warren, was little more than a vessel for him to complain to). Talking about how much Ndugu, even though he couldn't read and didn't understand the letters Warren sent, appreciated his kindness.
Then he saw the sweet picture Ndugu drew of them holding hands under sunshine and blue skies.
This was a moment where Warren realized that, even though his life didn't turn out the way he wanted it to (or thought he wanted it to), his life did have value. And he did, in fact, make a positive change in someone's life.
Also, as far as body language goes, I don't think Warren would've looked up at the end if he was sad. I think he was simply overcome with emotion.
