Did anyone cry?
Just wonderin...coz the end scene is pretty sad...
shareI disagree...I cried because through all that had happened, Warren was important, the picture to me signified, and I think Warren too, that his existence mattered to Ndugu, it had changed his life, and that one thing was enough to make him cry tears of joy.
Did people really not get that?
Hm...i can't really see the feeling of "hopeless" in the end, but as many of you have mentioned, it was significant because Warren had finally opened himself up and cried. You can see throughout the movie he was bottling up all these emotions and kept a straight face, more like an awkward face. For many people, it takes time to realize and understand the significance of our lives, why we are here, the true meaning of like, and whether or not we do make a difference existing. That moment Warren opened up that letter from sister Nadine Gautier and saw the drawing from Ndugu, he realized his existence does matter, maybe not even to his own family, but to Ndugu it had made a difference.
shareat the end, i LOST IT. everytime i see it, without fail. and i watched it every day for a week once...
shareWow! Can you say "cult following"?
Always nice to see.
That was a smile his face morphed into at the end. Maybe we don't expect it in Nicholson's craggy old devilish face.
Reminds me very much of the ending of Wild Strawberries, when Dr. Borg's face also morphed into a smile of contentment and enlightenment.
Funny how many reasonably intelligent people who have missed that. They just don't see the redemption at the end. But maybe they need to see it more that once, just like I didn't see it the first time in About Schmidt. I do like films which reveal more to you when you see them over again.
This is a finely crafted film that knows just how much of what to give you.

Did you cry at the ending?
Jennie
This is one of the very few movies that I have cried because of. But it wasn't because the ending was hopeless, it was because it was so uplifting. He finally realized that he had made a positive impact on the world and that his life wasnt pointless as he was really starting to accept. This is just about one of the happiest movies I have ever seen which is ironic because the majority of the movie is quite depressing.
You really cant find a happier film than this one if you really understand what Warren went through.
I definitely want to read the books. I thought there was a first one but now I'm hearing there's 2. Yeah I cried because Warren was crying

Yeah that's true
Jennie
I think Warren cried because he realized that he actually had someone that cared for him.
I did cry and I almost NEVER cries at movies.
well i dont want to seem naiv, but i thought the message of the ending was simply that all that crap didnt matter, were alive and thats the greatest gift we can get, so stop complaining
and hell yeah i cried
Yeah I would have to agree with that. I saw the ending as (before he opened the letter) that Warren's life was filled with disappiontments and he had reached the point where you have to ask yourself Why should I still be here? I lost everything (well figuratively speaking he still had his home and that HUGE RV lol). But when he opened the letter from Nbugu he had a sense of hope. Someone did appreciate his existance, (or maybe just his $22 haha only kidding) and it gave him hope that he can make changes to have a sense of fulfillment although his life is almost up.
I was skeptical to see this film b/c I had heard people actually walked out of the theater but I enjoyed it. I am only 21 yrs old but I have already had these thoughts on life. It was refreshing to see it on the screen with the ending that (to me) reflected hope. I guess the ending is open to interpretation and it all depends on how the individual sees it.
The whole movie is heartbreaking. I even read the synopsis on wikipedia and get sad. Jack shouldve won an oscar for this movie above all else. I mean he even looks older. In The Departed he's older but confident, but in this he's feeble abd depressed. Brilliant.

I did cried and I agree that it is sad but I think that there is some hope for Schmidt at the end of the story. The kid showed him that his life had a purpose, that he was going to transcend by making a difference in the boys life, that someone was going to remember for sure that he ever existed.
shareI join the crying choir. It happens extremely rarely. All the usual superficial "emotions" in movies don't do anything for me. But this movie and Nicolson's performance had me completely dissolved. As a 47-year old man, I can all too well identify with Schmidt and his emotions. The power of this movie, apart from its solid acting, is its reflection of so many real people's real feelings in life. Brilliant how details of humour has been blended in. Schmidt's face when Roberta joins him in the pool is priceless. This is cinema at its best without computer animation, special effects etc.
shareA wonderful and hopeful ending.
I would suggest 'Nights of Cabiria' (1957) if you want to see something else, but I'll stop at that so as not to spoil it for you.
