shareFYI: You're just supposed to say things like that quietly to yourself
On the actual subject- I guess they could have done it more tastefully. Only showed you certain parts and you could figure out the rest by Schmidt's expression. But I have no problem with it, and I guess it is in keeping with the awkwardness and bluntness of the film.
My feeling is that while it didn't bother me, it really wasn't necessary. If they cut it, it would have been good because then the film would have contained no nudity at all. So few films do these days.
But it's not exactly a family film and anyone who places such importance on nudity or can't handle seeing a woman (of any shape) naked would be too young or immature to grasp this film anyway.
And that's all i have to say about that. For now.
The scene was digusting. Don't get me wrong, Bates is a good actress and must have had some guts doing it, but it was completely unnecessary. Alexander Payne is a sick man, I don't know what he was thinking. I admire Bates, but she needs to have a bit more respect for herself instead of taking her clothes off because the director tells her to. Most of us don't want to see these kinds of things
shareApparently this movie made a lot of people have to clean up their couch after all the puking. You KIDS are making me laugh (and I'm 25). Payne did it on purpose, to show Bates' character's unabashed and unapologetic sexuality, no matter what her size. She wanted to be erotic around Nicholson's character (yes, fat people DO have sex, and they CAN BE sexual, just like young, thin people). What Payne also was trying to show was Nicholson's character's horrified reaction to this nature. Was she "gross" to look at? Perhaps, since Americans are saturated with an ideal form of nudity. But that wasn't the point--the point was, Nicholson was uncomfortable and she made him feel that way. And it was funny. And if you think that scene should have been cut because it "made you want to vomit", then go watch a porno instead.

EXACTLY. That's exactly how I was going to put it. I found it nasty, and I covered the nude part of her with my hand in front of my eyes, but it really did explain her character well. It wasn't about shock value at all.
bold and courageous move by kathy bates.
loved it.
laughing at the immature reaction of everyone here who "puked in the mouth or vomited all over themselves," ahh, the joys of being 14 years old.

ssmith-58's reply is one of the very few thoughtful ones in this thread.
The scene was not untasteful, it was not done to shock us, rather it was used to clarify Bates' extravagant character for us.
And besides, what's the difference between a young naked body and an old one? Answer: The latter is considered disgusting because of the sick obsession of our popular culture with being young and sexy. It's so pathetic, even though I must admit I tend to think like that myself too... while I know that everyone will look like that at some point in their lifes. Happy puking, kids... :P

Bates' performance in that hot tub scene was a tribute to her capturing with integrity the eccentric nature and sexuality of the character she portrays.
Some have offered the opinion that the scene should have only showed hints at her displaying nudity to Schmidt in a less than magazine-perfect form, and that the camera should instead have concentrated on Schmidt's reaction. I don't agree.
The scene is just that much more effective when we can share Schmidt's surprise and instinctive retreat (and all the while we can appreciate the irony that Schmidt isn't exactly Mark Spitz in swimwear, either!)
The scene is that much stronger for Bates' integrity to her acting craft. It's not so much that Schmidt is repulsed by her figure, after all his wife would have certainly had a very similar appearance when in the buff.
Schmidt is just blown away by the overt sexual aggression of this formidable woman.
Can't we enjoy the scene as it is intended without analyzing the actors appearance?
Let's get real here. We are watching a movie and enjoying a story. If a viewer is only interested in how tittilating or otherwise a naked person is to behold within a movie's storyline, then that viewer really isn't watching a movie, is he/she? It's just a bunch of images to judge against your expected standards, isn't it?
Bates appears unclothed except for paint in "At Play in the Fields of the Lord" too, and it underscores that character's mental breakdown in that story. She does what it takes, and more power to her.
I am certain that Kathy Bates knows that there will be certain people of puerile disposition who will mock and feign disgust at her un-Playboy shape and you know what? She doesn't care. She is comfortable with herself.
What is wrong with you?
If you are actually telling me that you physically threw up looking at Kathy Bates nude, then you have alot more serious things to worry about. But if you did not literally throw up, then you just simply need to GROW up! Kathy is a beautiful woman who put her body into her character just as much as her soul. This was, indeed, a bold move by Bates and I have total respect for her. She is not some 20 something bimbo who makes alot of movies because she's 'hot'; but because she can ACT! I enjoyed the scene; she's not a supermodel, but she is very attractive - with or withOUT her clothes!

No way, i did not want to see some fat 50 year old lady! give me some hot babe anytime in that tub scene but Bates... Ughhhhh.

This is not a commercial advertisment which should make someone buy a product that usually has nothing to do with a supermodel who is more or less undressed to make people pay attention. This is a movie, this is art. Many people say movies are not art, and all they should do is entertain. There are enough movies for them, by far too many, and art is unfortunately retreating. Movies like "About Schmidt" are almost extinct type, like Capra or Ford movies which try to be commercial without betraying art. And Kathy Bates is without any doubt an actress-artist.
This movie is "R" rated, I hope not because of that scene, but because of entire atmosphere and thematics, and it has enough critics and descriptions, so people who can't handle any of this content have been warned. But it's interesting that some people who are easilly offended either don't care to read (and then find someone else guilty) or watch such a movie in spite of that, and then cry how disgusting, immoral, pervert etc. it was.
If you visit any naturist beach you'll see people of any age, size, beauty, weight etc., from almost newborn kids to people in their 80's. And I have never seen anyone showing repugnance, never heard any comment. Noone staring at anyone, for admiring a great body, or for abhoring someone less perfect. After all, what is perfect? Criteria for beauty have been changing throughout history. Today we tend to make limits to everything and ignore any possibility that someone might find beauty in anything out those prescribed standards.
Noone has to find Kathy Bates beautiful in that scene, but why denying others right to feel opposite? And, that scene was (as mentioned above and by former posters) anyway not ment to show beauty or ugliness, but a character - and it was done great.
What is wrong with you people who utter phrases such as "it made me puke!". How very sad and pathetic that you've been absorbed so much buy ideology and values that only the young is beautiful!!! Alright, she isn't exactly my type either, but don't you think saying it would make you puke is going a little too far...she isn't that bad! PLUS she can act!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We were born naked, we're gonna die naked and I have to say there are a lot more people like Kathy than there are firm, young bodied scarlets for you all to oggle. Just stop being so *beep* pathetic!!!!!!!!

i have a massive amount of respect for her doin that...hardly the epitome of glamour but i hope i have her attitude towards my body at her age.

Thanks for the comments.
Actually, I thought Jack Nicholson looked a lot worse naked than Kathy Bates, which, of course, isn't mentioned because he's a male.
But his facial expression when she jumped in the hot tub was t'die for!
he was so disgusted!!
jack did look a lot worse naked i agree with you

And do you all realize this thread is based on the perversions of kalencooper?
He didn't say how it was so beautiful and necessary to the film; he basically said he wanted to see more fat old chicks on screen.

yes we get ur subtle point. very funny too!
//Knowledge is power and Geek is chic//
Nicholson's facial expression when she jumped in the hot tub was to die for!
Careful man, if an enemy state of the USA is reading this, they now know how to defeat the American military: Just drop flyers with photos of naked old women and the troops will run away screaming.
Seen from Europe, the shocking part is the American society's hysterical reaction to nudity, like the fine triggered by Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction". Violence in movies is no problem at all, but a female breast flashing across the screen in a split second is a threat to the nation. I guess soon new-born babies in America will have to be blindfolded during breast-feeding so they don't see a female breast, because they are under 18. Good grief.
"He didn't say how it was so beautiful and necessary to the film; he basically said he wanted to see more fat old chicks on screen."
That's true, but he opened a great discussion, and I'm thankful for that, though I don't agree with his attitude. And, of course, your too ("perversions of kalencooper") - why would it be perverse to find anything beautiful? Because of age? So Mozart and Bach are out, Eminem and U2 are O.K. Oh, no, this music is too young (underage), so let's make compromise - from Elvis to ABBA would be normal, moral and legal. Or is it the size what one shouldn't admire? Well, Kilimanjaro is too big, Irish hills are too small... we must visit only Appalachian or Apenines size of mountains. Anyone enjoying Grand Canyon is a pervert, isn't he?
Yes, I am exaggerating, it is a ridiculous example. But so is calling perversion everything that someone doesn't like.
Perversion is being sexually stimulated by something that's different from the norm.
I'd imagine that old, overweight women fall into that category.
Who declared the norm? I don't remember Bible or any religion's holly books, Greek philosophers, French Encyclopedistes, constitutions, UN resolutions etc. saying anything about the age or weight of a person who could be allowed to be sexually stimulating, or the age or weight of the person who would be allowed to find them sexually stimulating.
If we accept that this norm exists, given by some superior being, where is the limit? At what age does a person become sexually unattractive? This is an important question, because that would mean that each director would have to check if his actresses may cross that line during making a movie (and if they haven't yet, hasten making any potentially sexually stimulating scenes). And if you found some actress (or singer or whatever) attractive, you must be careful and keep in mind that once in her career a point will occur when you'll have, from that day on, find her non-attractive for ever more. Also, as most males happen to be married, they must on the wedding day be warned till when are they allowed to be stimulated by their wives, unless wanted to be considered perverts.
The same must be applied on weight. And what weight would be considered a line of pervertion? Or would height also be taken as additional factor? Shouldn't we rather use BMI (body mass index)? After that, many pieces of art (from old Greece to Rubens) will probably have to be locked in dungeons of galleries, and only art historians proved to be non-perverts will be allowed to enter.
And next? Will women (or man) with short or long necks, green or brown eyes, black or red hair "fall into that cathegory" because someone who likes blue eyes and blonde hair will consider them sexualy not stimulating, thus perverted each person who has different taste?
I skimmed through that since I'm not really trying to start some debate I don't care for over the internet.
For one, the norm is whatever society says it is. Don't try to go all philosophical on me with your "what is beauty, really?" crap. What the norm was or will be is another matter.
We could obviously never agree and this discussion would lead to nowhere; an we could maybe agree easier that Mrs Bates is not attractive to both of us, but we would not agree on basic principles of democracy - if people are free to chose the government and the president, why should they be deprived of the right to chose what they like?
Some people like to smoke. Today smoking became a mortal sin. As a life-long non-smoker I agree it would be better for them to quit, but who am I to say that smoking isn't bringing them pleasure?
It is indeed a philosphical question, but it shows how little tolerance is preserved in today "free" and "democratic" world.
Now, I'm speaking as an immature, teenage male when I say Kathy Bates nude was one of the most titillating and hilarious scenes in recent film history. I admit, if other people didn't find it repulsive I wouldn't find it titillating, but I'd still think of it as a humorous scene that fleshes (har har har) out her character.
