movies that are very good but you don't want to see again

this is one of mine. another is children of men. both are so grim, almost painful to watch. maybe also stalingrad, although it isn't as good a film as the other two. watching all 3 in a row would require prozac.

The movie I can't watch ever again is "Sophie's Choice". I couldn't watch it as a teen; I always heard of this one "scene", and that scared me. So, one afternoon, in my 20's, I decided to watch it. It was on Encore; no one was home, and I thought, "it's time!". Well ... I was watching and nothing was happening. I just figured that it wasn't too bad; maybe, the "scene" was when she came back to the apartment, and Stingo had discovered her father was a Nazi supporter. You come to know the "back story"; the scene with her lover; finding out she is a mother; the scene working as a secretary for the Commandant. But, I continued to watch, and finally, discovered the "scene". At the time, my son was very young. I'll never forget my horror when I watched. I just thought, "how could I ever make this decision?" "How could I go on, after having been made to make this decision?" I felt physically sick when it was over. My husband and son came back from the mall, and I grabbed him and hugged him. I wouldn't let go; it was too real! Never, never again will I watch it~once was enough!

I'm with you. Mind you I adore Meryl Streep she's one of the best actresses to grace the Hollywood screen. SC is a very well made film, great cast, great acting, but I absolutely hated it. I was sad for weeks after seeing. This was too real, too shocking, too depressing. Once was enough for me. However, I did see it again and regretted it AGAIN. Of course the whole point of the film is that after she made her choice, she suffers more and more. She also loses her son AND gets to relive the entire tragedy and lives a life of torment. Who needs that?

COLD MOUNTAIN FOR SURE!!! and the deer hunter saw it it was amazing but i NEVER want to see it again

The Piano with Holly Hunter. One of the most amazing movies I've ever watched. Holly Hunter won an Oscar for the role but it is so disturbing on so many levels.

reply

A L'interieur is such a film.

As for The Pianist, I own it on DVD and can watch it over again because despite its grimness it is a triumphant story with great music.

There, daddy, do I get a gold star?

reply

Der Untergang (Downfall) for sure. I watched it in a movie theater which made it even more disturbing for me. I felt sick as a puppy after the movie...

Just in case someone is interested, I'm not even German.

reply

Come on...bunch of nazi's killing themselves.Great family fun...to the point where Goebbels kids are killed. Now that is a scene I NEVER want to watch again. The last act is amazing (quite factual inaccurate though),and the characters with redeeming qualities end up good. But no,I will probably never watch Downfall again...

Also,I would never go trough"4 months 3 weeks and 2 days again".It simply drains every single bit of joy from you.

without a doubt 'Schindler's List'. Much like the Pianist, but in my opinion even grimmer...
excellent movie. once is enough though - waayyy to sentimental.

reply

Same movie for me.

Requiem For a Dream is another.

I want to watch "Saving Private Ryan" again, but that first half hour is too awful. If I watch it again, I will skip those scenes on the beach.

reply

I have to agree with jeanthebean - the first half hour of Saving Private Ryan is just TOO gruesome. I simply can't watch it again. Unfortunately, that is really the best part of that film.

reply

"that is really the best part of that film" good god you say that!
that part was brilliant!

Schindler's List

City of Life and Death - This depressed me badly

Nanking - I could not finish this one. When the old man spoke of his mother being stabbed to death and his little brother bayonetted and thrown, I lost it.

The Whale Rider

I can't watch anything about Anne Frank because I know what happens and The Boy in the striped Pajamas gets me very sad just thinking about it.

Downfall was a really good movie. Seeing men who would rather take their own life than live in a world without National Socialism was uplifting. What was terrible was when I came out of the movie house and saw all the 'useless eaters" and gutter trash walking the street--how disgusting.

reply

1970s Japanese anime of The Little Mermaid, the ending is just so haunting and sad.

RingRing hooka RingRing

reply

I agree with that one. another is "Conspiracy." both are very well done but no interest in seeing again.

reply

I thought of Requiem for a Dream as one of these.

It was an excellent movie, but I found it really distressing to watch and I wouldn't particularly want to watch it again

reply

I agree, amazing movie but extremely tough to watch

reply

Requiem for a dream...easily the most depressing film i have seen
but I loved it

Grave of the Fireflies

Lilja 4-ever. One of my top ten favorite films but I only wanna watch it once, for my own good

reply

Kenneth, I agree with you, it's the most tragic movie ever EVER made. Period.

reply

Glad to see people on here who love Lilja 4-Ever as much as I do, great choice for top ten film material.

As for this thread's question: Can't really think up of anything that's good that I dun want to see over. If it's a good movie, why wouldn't u want to see it again someday? Don't make sense to me.

reply

great choice...
I totally agree, Grave of the Fireflies is too painful to watch.
A great film but gut-wrenching at the same time. How can some-one make such a film.

reply

Try 'Barefoot Gen'...

reply

This film has certainly gained my respect. Especially Hosenfeld. And I agree with you; I really loved this movie, but I don't think I would watch it again for a very long time. It's just too painful. Maybe someday I'll watch it again. But that'd be quite some time.

reply

I think I could watch it again b/c like someone else said, it was grim, but it's not as painful b/c he survives. Also, b/c it wasn't so graphic or over-the-top in the violence...like for example that you know his family is dead but you don't actually see it. If I'd seen it, I'd probably never watch it. But it'll take some time before I do again.
Anyway, I would say The Passion of the Christ is one for sure. I can't exactly say why, except that maybe it's too sacred for me to just watch on my tv screen casually one day.

reply

The Green Mile for sure. Maybe once every 10 or 20 years
