I'm not a fan of either at one point I really loved them both and Rob Zombie in general but over the years my love went away.
But if you ask me now as a more developed and mature film advocate I say House of 1000 Corpses is the better film.
Here's why.
House of 1,000 Corpses has more plot to the chew on although convoluted most of the time.
Let's compare the plots:
House features a group of youngsters running into a macabre group of people and they have to deal with the torture that group provides them.I'm really confused by the group's reaction to each other Are they family? Are they a cult? What exactly are they? the confusion crews bigger by the inclusion of Captain Splauding & his friend in the beginning. The one thing that's really poor about House's plot is that it's clear that Rob had no understanding about how to create a original plot as this film is clearly a rip-off of Texas Chainsaw Massacre.Plus Rob just derives a lot of his plot's from other and better films.
Devil's Rejects features the firefly family just going on a cat and mouse run from the cops while taking a few hostages.See to me The Devil's Rejects just like House was a poor man's Texas Chainsaw Massacre well Devil's is a dollar tree version of Natural Born Killers but without the satire, the wit & the liability of the antagonist of the story.
While both films feature generic plots I say House of 1,000 Corpses did more with what it had a Texas Chainsaw Massacre template.
House of 1,000 Corpses has stronger group of characters:
With House you had more depth with the firefly family due to it being a relatively slower paced film that allows you to take the time to breath.Sure the characters here are stereotypical slasher film fonder with the victims their and the villains their.
Devil's you got short periods of character development but most of them are unlikable or uninteresting.
So none of them are really strong in the character department but I find myself at-least not detesting the characters as much with House.Devil's has forced sentimentality with it's despicable characters so it's rather ineffective.
Now let's get into the visual style of the two films.
House although it's chaotic it provides a more exciting visual style with it's quick cuts, sometimes annoying red filter of inappropriate scenes, & the blue tent sometimes works.
Devil's is just bland grimy and doesn't have anything to provide in this department now I know some fans will says that's the whole point and to that I give this rebuttal "If a film goer like myself doesn't get any pleasure via entertainment than what's the point of making a film anyways"
Overall House of 1,000 Corpses has covered every department and is a better film than the overrated dribble of The Devil' Rejects.
I really don't understand how anyone could like any of Rob Zombie's films. His most acceptable work to date is Lords of Salem but even that isn't much to write home about.
