Who actually liked Claire?? I hated her character. A phase of it is 1 thing, but entire series of her crap really hurt the show. I got to the point i was rolling my eyes when Claire scenes came up. at times i skimmed thru her scene to still understand whats going on, but also not fully watch it either. Brenda as well could have been more a phase than entire series.
I will say both Claire's and Brenda's characters are real world persona's from some people. But I don't really care to watch it in a tv show.
It's funny that you mention Brenda and Claire as two characters that you disliked and found unbearable, because the two of them are probably my two of my favorite characters on the show.
The only point in the series where I found myself genuinely disliking Claire was at the onset of Season 5, during her fight with Ruth and her living with Billy. She just seemed to become unhinged during those episodes, her need for independence and her constant and unyielding assumption that she is an adult and knows everything there is to know about the world seemed to get out of hand causing her to become very grating.
Other than that though, I think that Claire was the most relatable character on the show. Maybe it's because she is the character currently around my age-group that I found myself connecting to her, but I think that she had one of the most fully-realized arcs on the show. We really got to watch her growup and the 5 seasons that we had of the show really met Claire at an extremely significant and interesting time in her life and her development, we got to see those fantastic years where she transformed from a child to a woman.
I'm not saying she couldn't be pretentious and didn't get carried away with her own perceived brilliance at points, but I would rather watch a character with human flaws then watch one who was all positive and was devoid of any ugly traits whatsoever. The entire series to me just got to see Claire search for meaning and search for some sort of place in the world, to a small extent I felt that she was somewhat forgotten in relation to her family and David and Nate.
Obviously she was much younger, she didn't have the boldness of Nate and she didn't have David's work ethic (David's problems were often the family's problems seeing as he ran the business), in the Fishers world I always felt that Claire was left to fend for herself (she also didn't help by being somewhat guarded). I got the impression that her problems were seen as somewhat trivial to everyone else, Claire seemed to need to rely on herself to navigate through the world.
Her relationship with Ruth was possibly my favorite of the series, their development, the way that Claire began to see her mother as full-fledged human being and Ruth began to see Claire as an equal and not a thoughtless child, I thought it was fantastic.
I absolutely loved Claire! I could relate to her angst and her desire to move on to better things. She was unorthodox for sure but that to me was part of her charm. She has so much dimensions and layers to her character, same for Brenda. They were both hands down my favorite characters and they showed so much growth as the show developed.
Claire was just a "oh the worlds owes me everything", "hates on everyone becus she thinks shes had it so badly" etc etc. She was nuttin more than a bratty b****. I never felt sorry for her becus she deserved most everything that happened to her.
Both Claire and Brenda were incredibly unlikable in the early seasons, but by season five, they were two of the best characters on the show. They had some of the best growth.
At first I did not care for Claire , as the series went on I fell in love with her and her character. I love Brenda from the beginning . But Billy was my all-time favorite character in any series I am ever seen. I have watched the series 5 times in its entirety .
I did. Maybe because she reminds me of my own daughter (a successful baker, rather than a photographer) who mirrors Claire's wit and qualities - both good and bad.
In the first couple of episodes, I thought Claire was going to be a typical bratty adolescent with a drug problem, and I was annoyed by her character.
But, I thought Lauren Ambrose did a fantastic job of giving Claire a lot of dimension. I could really relate to her struggle, as both the youngest child (though I'm the eldest in my family) and the only daughter in the Fisher family, to figure out who she was and what she might become.
Claire's attitude, her anger and cynicism, were her main defense mechanisms, and I agree that her attitude could get a bit tedious. But I think Lauren Ambrose showed that there was always a lot going on under the surface of the character.
I did not like Claire either. She was just way too much of a spoiled brat who felt entitled to everything.
Claire actually reminded me of this crazy hippy girl I knew who was totally detached from reality and consumed by her ultra-liberal views. She would always get really angry to the point of hysteria and lash out whenever someone challenged her views or pointed out her hypocrisy.
I grew to really loathe her character as the seasons went on. She was nothing but a spoiled and entitled brat and that whole teen angst thing got tiresome real quick.
