Drew Barrymore miscast as pretentious teacher

Sorry, she just never sells me on the whole 'intellectuallllllllllll' "Cellar Door" English teacher. I'm not buying it. Should've used someone else for that part.

Gotta say, I 100% agree with you. I re-watched this about a month ago and I kept saying to myself... she is a terrible actress! I like Drew in some stuff, for sure, but it really didn't work here, for me at least.

I thought she was decent and the role suited her(more importantly, she was also an executive producer...) In fact, according to the 2016 documentary included on the DVD*, it was only because of her attachment to the film that they were able to secure the original funding!

Drew probably wanted to be in an “artsy” movie but artistic filmmakers such as David Lynch probably wouldn’t cast her in their films, so she chose this role. It’s also interesting that she was in ET, and Donnie Darko has a similar aesthetic to ET

Check out "Doppelganger". That was something of an artsy film

I see what you mean. She was also 25 years old, but acted like a divorced, cynical 40 year old teacher.

After watching DD again after all of these years, there's a lot of aspects to the portyayal of high school culture that come across as amateurish and contrived. One example was allowing that religious teacher to invite Swayze's guru/cult character to hold an forced indoctrination assembly on school grounds.

I think the only true high school portrayal was chubby Cherita being bullied by Seth Rogaine and his henchmen.

I think she was the perfect choice for the movie
