Rank Hayao Miyazaki Films (NO SPOILERS PLEASE)

A few notes first.

1:No spoilers in this thread, please do not discuss anything about these films, at all. Please just rank his movies you've seen, perhaps with score out of 10 for each (please no spoilers, no complaining about others' rankings, no discussing versions, etc.)

2:If you love any of his films, it's a pretty safe bet you will at least like any other particular one.

3:I'm not trying to claim to be a film expert, though I am very picky. I like to be entertained. I like something to make sense, whether or not it is fantastic or complicated.

4:I use a 10 point scale where 5.5 is a good average movie. So 6 is just a bit above average. (I would say that my 7 is a normal voters 8, my 8 their 9, and my 9 their 10, I basically would never give out a 10 (only done so 3 times, having watched a few to several hundred films.)) (This paragraph was just so you don't think I hate Porco Rosso!)

Finally, my ranking, in order:

9s to 10s:
Spirited Away (2001) 9.1

8s to 9s:
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984) 8.6
Ponyo (2008) 8.5 (Absolutely the best one for young kids (age 4-6)).
Howl's Moving Castle (2004) 8

7s to 8s:
Kiki's Delivery Service (1989) 7.6
My Neighbor Totoro (1988) 7

6s to 7s:
Castle in the Sky (1986) 6.7
Princess Mononoke (1997) 6.6
Porco Rosso (1992) 6.1

I have not watched Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro (1979) yet, I'll post in a few days where it stands.

Been a while since I've seen some of these, so I might have to rearrange these a bit when I rewatch some of them. I think this is a pretty spot on assessment of how I feel about each of the movies, though.

I haven't seen Porco Rosso, yet.

note: Very difficult to accurately rank. Every movie he has directed for Studio Ghibli is a Masterpiece. So basically everything he's done minus Lupin, which is just mediocre.(It was his first picture and it wasn't Studio Ghibli so he didnt have creative control.) Also Isao Takahata is possibly equally brilliant.

Whisper of the Heart - 8 (he didn't direct it, I know. But I love it and he was pretty involved in it.)

I have yet to see a Miyazaki movie that I did not immensely enjoy. I don't believe one exists, nor will one ever exist.

I still need to see Castle of Cagliostro, Ponyo, and Kiki's Delivery Service but I have high hopes/expectations for all three.

I do agree with your assessment, although I say you can't rank these movies against each other. Some are meant for kids and some are made for adults. In Howl, Mononoke, Castle in the Sky and Nausicaa there's war and suffering that no kid would know what to do with.

I'd have to put Porco Rosso at the bottom because the story felt unfinished with the titular character not getting rid of his curse. Why he would choose to do a sequel of this particular movie is also beyond me.

Nausicaa and Castle of Cagliostro are by far his best.

I guess these are all Miyazaki directed, but I know he was heavily involved in Whisper of the Heart (9/10) too. Oh and I like Only Yesterday (9/10), Grave of the Fireflies (9/10) and Pom Poko (8/10) by Takahata as well. Ocean Waves (8/10) and The Cat Returns (7/10) are the weakest from Ghibli, but I like them a lot too.
