Rank Hayao Miyazaki Films (NO SPOILERS PLEASE)

A few notes first.

1:No spoilers in this thread, please do not discuss anything about these films, at all. Please just rank his movies you've seen, perhaps with score out of 10 for each (please no spoilers, no complaining about others' rankings, no discussing versions, etc.)

2:If you love any of his films, it's a pretty safe bet you will at least like any other particular one.

3:I'm not trying to claim to be a film expert, though I am very picky. I like to be entertained. I like something to make sense, whether or not it is fantastic or complicated.

4:I use a 10 point scale where 5.5 is a good average movie. So 6 is just a bit above average. (I would say that my 7 is a normal voters 8, my 8 their 9, and my 9 their 10, I basically would never give out a 10 (only done so 3 times, having watched a few to several hundred films.)) (This paragraph was just so you don't think I hate Porco Rosso!)

Finally, my ranking, in order:

9s to 10s:
Spirited Away (2001) 9.1

8s to 9s:
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984) 8.6
Ponyo (2008) 8.5 (Absolutely the best one for young kids (age 4-6)).
Howl's Moving Castle (2004) 8

7s to 8s:
Kiki's Delivery Service (1989) 7.6
My Neighbor Totoro (1988) 7

6s to 7s:
Castle in the Sky (1986) 6.7
Princess Mononoke (1997) 6.6
Porco Rosso (1992) 6.1

I have not watched Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro (1979) yet, I'll post in a few days where it stands.

I forgot to add: Miyazaki's message board on imdb http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0594503/board is not so active, and Spirited Away is my favorite, so I put this thread here and not there.

I loved all his films, but I think it's hard to compare/rate them against each other. They're just too different! : 0

This is judged by my FAVORITES. Take Grave of the Fireflies for example, it is one of the BETTER movies, but very tough to watch, hence it not being one of my favorites.

I didn't want to score, but here they are in some-what-order. I left an empty row, where are thought the difference between the two was notable. (Mostly they could very well be re-arranged with their neighbors.)

i haven't seen nearly enough of his work, although i've got a few lying around waiting to be watched. from what i've seen:

Spirited Away - 4.5 stars
Ponyo - 4.5 stars
Nausicaa - 4 stars
Howl's Moving Castle - 4 stars
Princess Mononoke - 3.5 stars
My Neighbor Totoro - 3.5 stars

Have you seen Lupin the Third yet? Your list is pretty close to mine. These are the three I watch the most and are my favorites:

Nausicaa
Ponyo
Spirited Away

I love these too but they don't get quite as much replay from me:

Lupin III
How's Moving Castle
Castle in the Sky

I enjoyed these last ones but won't revisit them anytime soon:

Porco Rosso
Princess Mononoke - This is the film that got me into Miyazaki but it's grown stale to me over time.
My Neighbor Totoro - Used to love this more but Ponyo replaced it as my feel-good movie

i haven't seen Lupin yet, although i did download it. the problem is that quality downloads are hard to find, so i wind up having to save up my pesos and buy the super-expensive Disney DVD copies of the films. but it is my goal to watch all of Miyazaki's work - especially more Sherlock Hound, which i loved as a kid and only recently discovered he did a couple episodes of. great show!

I also haven't seen Lupin, but I've been meaning to. With Whisper of the Heart - it's a Ghibli film and Miyazaki has a writing credit, but most people would discount it from the list because he didn't direct it. I have to admit the only Ghibli film I've seen other than Miyazaki's is Grave of the Fireflies. But that's also amazing (4.5 stars).

Yes, now that I look back, Miyazaki did write the screenplay, and it's an absolutely amazing film, so I would add it somewhere around the 8/10s.

Kiki's Delivery Service- only Miyazaki film I haven't seen. I'm a huge fan of his. In my eyes, both Princess Mononoke and My Neighbor Totoro are his best films. Mononoke will always be my favorite though.
